Discernment adds to the ability to enjoy and engage in works that come from those with very different philosophies than your own. Discernment allows you to grow, not by giving away all that you are but by adding to that which you already have.
"Throwing the baby out with the bath water" may be a "natural" tendency for mankind but it does not have to be the way we live or think. In fact, the disciple of Christ has been taught that they need to use eyes that see and ears that hear, in other words, they need to be able to discern what is truth in a given situation and what is falsehood.
Our music, readings, art, and so forth give us ample opportunity to exercise this skill. It is especially true of the study of the scriptures. Studying things out is a requirement if one is to have any real benefit. Hopefully this capacity flows out to other things in life as well. We want to use caution with some things that settle so easily on the mind though and seem to require no thought. Television and music are two such experiences that come quickly to mind.
Discernment then should lead us to exciting adventures of discovery where we do not need to fear that we will lose ourselves in the presence of those that appear different.
