The Internal Revenue Service opened the 2014 filing season Jan. 31, and taxpayers have until April 14 to file their tax returns. The IRS expects to receive more than 148 million individual tax returns this year, with more than four out of five returns being filed electronically. About three out of four filers typically get refunds, and last year, the IRS reports that taxpayers received an average refund of $2,755.

Have you given any consideration to how you’ll file your tax return? If you’re expecting a refund, how will you use your tax refund? Will you treat yourself to a major purchase, such as a new TV? Or will you finally start that emergency savings account that you’ve been promising yourself?

On today’s episode of Your Money, Your Matters, we’ll talk about how to prepare for tax season, including what documents you’ll need to complete your return; reviewing any life changes that might affect your tax return, and considering any year-end tax moves that could reduce your taxable income. We’ll also address how to protect yourself from identity theft this tax season. Join radio personalities Linda Webb-Manon and Rick Grady, Cornerstone Credit Union League; Courtney Moran, Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation, and Todd Mark, Consumer Credit Counseling Services as we explore the options.

Your Money. Your Matters is a weekly show broadcasting every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon CST. The program examines financial issues of most importance to consumers. Tune in; share your thoughts; or gain helpful advice.
