Dr. Paolo Macchiarini is a world-renowned surgeon who is a leader and pioneer in the field of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. In 2008 in Barcelona, Dr. Macchiarini made transplant history by using stem cells to help achieve the world’s first successful in-human transplantation of a tissue-engineered organ (windpipe) without immunosuppression. Then in 2011 in Stockholm, Dr. Macchiarini made transplant history again, implanting the world’s first bio-artificial windpipe using a completely artificial, lab-made nanocomposite in an adult and again in 2013 in a child in the US. Since then, Dr. Macchiarini has continued to cross frontiers with his cutting edge work, including the first laryngo-tracheal artificial tissue engineered transplantation in 2012. Currently, Dr. Macchiarini a Professor of Regenerative Surgery and Director of the European Airway Institute and Advanced Center of Translational Regenerative Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden as well as Professor and consultant thoracic surgeon at the Kuban State Medical University in Krasnodar, Russia.
