    Veterans Returning with PTSD

    The Veterans returning with PTSD are having multiple related problems. These other symptoms include, but are no limited to, DUI, Assault  and Domestic Abuse.
    It is very difficult for a person with PTSD to talk about their experiences and feelings. The problems noted above end up being the focus of treatment. By treating these underlying symptoms the primary problem is not being addressed. This will not be effective in treating the primary diagnosis, nor will it be nearly as positive in transitioning the Veteran back in to Civilian life.
    Veterans are ending up court ordered to domestic abuse counseling, drug and/or alcohol treatment, etc.. A dramatic increase in suicide has been reported.
    While treating these problems is important, without any focus on the underlying cause, the prognosis for recovery, and return to normal life decreases dramatically.
    One example is a Veteran who got a DUI shortly after returning from Iraq. He has no history of substance abuse problems or diagnosis. He is court ordered for alcohol treatment per law due to the DUI. However, he is not an alcoholic. I am quite certain the alcohol treatment will not be detrimental, but it is not addressing his primary diagnosis of PTSD. Veterans are very reluctant to discuss any of this. If they can divert to another symptom, it makes it much easier to avoid the primary underlying problem. This allows the symptoms to actually increase.
    Family members need to be aware and persistent. Family and friends are crucial in directing the Veteran to the treatment and support they need for PTSD.  Despite the reluctance they may encounter, persistence makes a difference in timely treatment and positive outcome. Efficacy of treatment is diminished when this issue is not addressed immediately.

    Groups to expand free mental health services to veterans

    WASHINGTON — A significant number of soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq with mental health problems could benefit from an expanding program offering them free counseling.

    The Lilly Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Co., announced Monday it is contributing $1 million to Give an Hour and the American Psychiatric Foundation to help connect mental health professionals with veterans and their families.

    Psychiatrists, psychologists and other counselors volunteer a minimum of an hour a week for a year to help bridge the gap in mental health services provided to veterans.

    "Recent studies indicate that our military community is facing an emerging mental health crisis," said Barbara Romberg, a psychologist who founded Give an Hour in 2005.

    A study by the RAND Corporation estimates about 300,000 soldiers who had been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or major depression and 320,000 reported experiencing probable traumatic brain injury during deployment.

    The study also found that only 53% of service members with PTSD or depression had seen a physician or mental health care provider in the past year.

    Give an Hour and the American Psychiatric Foundation will be using the $1 million for recruitment and training, to raise public awareness of the program and to increase outreach to the military community, according to Romberg and Eli Lilly.

    Very Real and Misunderstood Illness

    My life has been dedicated to educating the public about mental illness and helping the mentally ill. I believe the USA has the best health care available, but would be foolish not to recognize it is in great need of revisions.
    The connection between mental health care and 'politics' is vast. I consider myself first a patriot and second conservative.
    With regard to mental health issues ( many issues, in my opinion) I believe a partisan approach is counter-productive to movement in a positive direction.
    Issues with the stigma of mental health and general understanding would seem basic to some. But, until you yourself, a friend, or family member have to enter this maze, there would be little reason to realize the complexity of the challenges that face this area of illness and treatment.
    The association with the debilitating ability to work, criminal behavior, drugs, and the homeless are all directly connected to the overall economy of this Country.
    As with many illness', mental illness can be devastating to not only the afflicted person, but the entire family.
    There are treatment options and increasing research is taking place. The large number of returning Veterans with PTSD is a sad state of affairs, however this has placed more of an emphasis on the dire need for further awareness,  research, and education.
    Mental illness is a major issue facing this Country.

    “What is Patriotism?” Is Patriotism important to the majority of Americans? Is it “politically correct” to question one’s patriotism? What makes a “good” American’?

    Merriam –Webster defines ‘Patriotism’ as: “love for or devotion to one's country”.

    When someone ‘loves’, they generally demonstrate their devotion by protecting what they love from whatever they perceive to be harm or injury.

    America was born in democracy. As American citizens we have the right and responsibility to protect and defend our constitutional civil liberties. One only has to look at history to prove, that in America, freedom has not come free.

    Hate and divisiveness are not synonymous with patriotism, nor are these emotions and actions consistent in the pursuit of life, liberty or happiness. It is imperative to recognize our enemies and defend this Country. Questioning one’s patriotism is paramount to continued freedom in America.
