We mark the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides. At the initiative of the Congress of Racial Equality, teams of Black and white civil rights activists rode buses from the North into the South to challenge the practice of segregation in inter-state travel. In so doing they faced brutal attacks, fire-bombings, prison, torture, lynching and betrayal. Find out about an upcoming conference where surviving Freedom Riders will tell their stories. Our guests are: Diane Nash; Ralph Fertig; Rev Jim Lawson and the grand-daughter of Irene Morgan the woman who stood up more than a decade before Rosa Parks.

The Death of Black Politics Marks guest is Kevin Gray, contributing editor for Black News in Columbia, South Carolina. Mark asks why can’t Republicans understand that there is still systematic racism in the USA at every level from small business, to corporations, to the Federal Government? Why can’t Democrats understand that there is severe cultural dysfunction internal to large groups of poor Blacks living in America’s ghetto?
