Are you barely hanging on to the knot at the end of your writer’s rope-of-hope? Have you found the traditional publishing route a lost opportunity? Is there another way to get your book published? Maybe it’s time for you to consider Custom Publishing. For years, editors have been teaching people to go the traditional route, get an agent and write a book proposal. Yet the traditional publishers are cutting back on the books which they print and the number of authors which they will publish. That path seems narrower and narrower. There is another way, custom publishing or independent publishing. With the “right” guidance, you can be much more successful with custom publishing than traditional. Tune in to find out how. Our expert guest, W. Terry Whalin understands both sides of the editorial desk--as an editor and a writer. A former book acquisitions editor for several publishers and a former literary agent, Terry is a Vice President and Publisher at Intermedia Publishing Group. He has written more than 60 books through traditional publishers in a wide range of topics from children’s books to biographies to co-authored books. Several of Terry’s books have sold over 100,000 copies. Terry’s newest book, JUMPSTART YOUR PUBLISHING DREAMS, INSIDER SECRETS TO SKYROCKET YOUR SUCCESS is packed with insight. Terry is a popular speaker and teacher at numerous writers’ conferences and an active member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

    Glimpses from the Writer's Glossary

    Linda Gilden

Every profession has its "lingo." Writing is no different. Join us as we talk about the words you need to know to be a writer. What is a query letter? What do publishers mean by "rights"? What do editors mean when they say to send an article "on speculation"? We'll define these and many more words that writers often hear. Be sure to call in with a word from the writers' vocabulary that you don't understand. Check out the past three segments from the “So You Want to be a Writer Series” in our archives.

    Writing and Speaking With Humor

    Pamela Christian

Using humor can make your message more memorable if used right. But if used wrong, it can actually detract from your message. Even those with natural ability for recognizing humor, must learn how to use humor effectively. Laughter creates a bridge between the communicator and the audience instantly connecting the audience with the presenter. That is, if the right type humor is used, at the right time. Pam Christian has a keen sense for using humor, evidenced by her ability to tell her story of dramatically surviving sudden cardiac arrest, while the audience laughs! The key is balancing the use of humor to the message you want to convey so your message is remembered, not your jokes. Join us as Pam shares more about this, providing helpful resources and instructing us about the 6 elements of using humor effectively. check out these links: Site for learning to use in speaking: http://www.humorpower.com/blog/2007/05/humor-written-spoken-and-visual Site for learning to use in writing: http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Uncyclopedia:How_To_Be_Funny_And_Not_Just_Stupid Site for Ebook "The Art of Using Humor in Public" http://www.squaresail.com/auh.html

    Wounded By Words

    susan titus osborn

Join Linda and her guest, author and speaker, Susan Osborn as they discuss her book "Wounded By Words", which offers hope and healing through Christ from these unseen hurts. Women who have grown up with the harsh reality of verbal abuse understand the pain and suffering it causes. The results of this kind of mistreatment may not cause bruises and other visible injuries, but nevertheless, the scars are there. These scars remain in the heart and mind, causing fear, powerlessness, and dependency.

    What Defines Christian Fiction?

    golden keyes parsons

When you hear the phrase Christian fiction, what do you think of? Some people think that it is stories about Biblical characters, the first Christians, or the early church. Some think it has to have the gospel integrated into it, either directly or indirectly in allegory. Others, believe that there has to be a clear salvation scene somewhere in the book for it to be labeled Christian fiction. Our guest, author, speaker and popular retreat leader Golden Keyes Parsons, will provide insight into this sometimes controversial realm of Christian writing. Be ready with your own thoughts and questions as we open the chat room and phone lines to your comments. If we have time, we might even explore the issue of "edgy" Christian fiction. We invite you to be a part of this informational hour on communicating with power.
