Let us consider the derivation and modern definitions of rejection.  “Reject” a French term first used in the 15 century meaning; “to throw away, cast away, vomit” or as a noun “a thing cast aside as unsatisfactory, or person considered low-quality and worthless” (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=reject).  The modern definition is the act of not accepting, believing, or considering something (merriam-webster.com).   Clearly, rejection is a negative term associated with negative feelings and emotions.  Therefore, while we know we have all experienced it and probably will again, it is critical to have useful tips and resources to deal with rejection in a healthy way.   Rejection does not have to impact us in such a way that it takes days, weeks or months to rebound from it.  Listen to the Come to the Table and Talk podcast episode; Rejection and its Impact for insightful and thoughtful discussion filled with personal experiences on the impact of rejection and ways to cope with it. A perspective that may be viewed by some as lenient, wrong or indulgent however, none of that matters.  What matters is standing by our belief to treat one another with kindness, love and respect, especially those with differing views or lifestyles. WYPO: Respecting individuals with differing views or lifestyles does not imply ones agreement with their actions. Exposure is simply the “fact or condition of being affected by something or experiencing something” (merriam-webster, 2016). You might even consider selecting a person from a group or culture that you think you are familiar with and know all about.  We are all aware of certain stereotypes about various cultures and people.  Maybe even chuckled about a few of them but when you actually take a moment and consider your true understanding of different cultures and ethnic groups including your capacity to view people in their true self, if you can’t honestly say your understanding is based on first-hand experience then you are shortchanging yourself. It is easy to take second hand information, run with it as if it is fact, and define an entire group of people. However, that is neither the smartest nor the most mature thing to do.  Go beyond yourself, add to your current base of knowledge have lunch, coffee, take a walk or simply strike up a conversation with someone “different” than you. Guess what you may find out that exposure is reciprocal.  As you are learning something about someone, you may have the opportunity to share something about your culture. Let us Come to the Table and Talk about current events and cultural exposure. WYPO—Exposure; learn about someone outside of your “world” Be well! Exposure. (n.d.). Whether or not we as a nation should celebrate not just the month but black history, continues to be the focus of ongoing debate in the media, classrooms, coffeehouses, and even small social circles. Celebrating black history does not take away from the fact that other cultures and groups are to be celebrated. It simply sheds light on the oft-missed fact that black history must be celebrated too. There is simply no inverse relationship there. A core of the celebration is two-fold to increase awareness and raise the level of knowledge, among other cultures and groups and among African-Americans to encourage, educate and build up. If all people who lack a clear understanding of African-Americans, their culture and way of life approached understanding black history with the same vigor that they put into their attempts to dispel positive truths about African-Americans and history; I can only believe that some of the severe, awful and unnecessary issues that have divided groups would not exist. When one sincerely attempts to get a clear understanding about a situation or person it is then that "come let us reason together" will influence perceptions. This should lead to new ways of thinking (perspectives).
