Oscar Jimenez-Solomon, MPH, Research Scientist and Research Coordinator, NYS Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence, NYS Psychiatric Institute Peggy Swarbrick, PhD, FAOTA, Wellness Institute Director, Collaborative Support Programs of NJ, Associate Professor, Rutgers University Poverty and economic dependency are barriers to the recovery and rehabilitation of people with serious mental illness. This talk will present the lessons of the Collaborative Support Programs of NJ in providing the financial wellness services to help individuals overcome poverty and dependency. Finally, the talk will comment on key components of a peer supported intervention to empower individuals to gain control over their finances, overcome poverty, build financial security and achieve self-sufficiency. Goals of this Talk: Discuss how poverty and economic dependency challenge the employment, recovery and rehabilitation of people with serious mental illness. Share the lessons of the Collaborative Support Programs of NJ, a peer-run agency, in providing economic empowerment supports for individuals in recovery; and provide examples of the types of economic empowerment services that can help individuals to overcome poverty and achieve financial security. Discuss the main components of the Peer Supported Economic Empowerment model (PSEE), a peer-facilitated intervention being developed by the New York State Psychiatric Institute Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence in partnership with the Institute of Wellness and Recovery at the Collaborative Support Programs of NJ.
