Antoine Christopher Smith was born on August 1, 1992 in Euclid, Ohio. He comes from a wide range of family history in music that once indulged very heavily in local bands as musicians, singers, dancers, composers, managers, and teachers. His main influences are his father, Robert Lee Smith III, who is a bass player, lead guitarist, trumpeter and pianist. His mother, Carolyn Fuentes who is a published writer, singer, keyboardist and drummer. His grandmother who is a gospel singer. His mother's sister Patricia, who is a violinist and plays the bass and last but certainly not least his grandfather, the late Rev. B. L. Miles who was a singer, and played the rhyme guitar, organ, and piano in his church.

His grandfather gifted Antoine with a keyboard, which is to him a cherished gift.

It is no wonder this young man is so talented!

Antoine also atributes his success to his faith and is a role model to his peers.

Antoine is a drummer and a as he puts it, a ”dabbling” keyboardist that composes and plays mainly, contemporary jazz.

In addition, he composes other genres as well including music for video games.

His latest CD is "Daydream" released under the "Turn on Records" label and "Mythical" and "City in the Sea" are yet to be released.

His desire is to enter into an Audio Production and Engineering program.

Join us as we talk to this mature, focused talented young man about his life and future plans at BlogTalkRadio.com/ColoredPeople on November 19, 2009 at 7pm PST/9pm CST/10pm EST

    Clayton "Bigtrigger" Corley - SOJPRADIO.com - ColoredPeople.net's Talented Member

Clayton (BigTrigger) Corley, Sr. is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He developed his love of writing at the age of 14 and his love of jazz from as far back as he can remember. While in high school, he wrote for the school newspaper and was recognized by the Pulitzer Prize Committee for Journalism for his articles about the West Philadelphia High Speedboys basketball team. As of May 2005, he became a published author with the release of Universal Moods (a short story collection). Clayton credits his literary influences from the likes of poets Langston Hughes, George Moses Horton and his mother, the late Barbara Mae Ayers, who was an accomplished writer in her own right. His love of jazz stems from childhood when he was asked to play the albums belonging to his parents while they entertained guests in the basement of their home. Yes, they ran a speakeasy and Clayton was the "Record Guy." His parent's collection consisting of artists such as Miles Davis, Errol Garner, Cannonball Adderley, and Nancy Wilson created the foundation for his broad knowledge of jazz. Clayton feels that jazz and poetry were made for each other. "Both have elements of improvisation and are major ways of negotiating agendas and communicating with one another. They also have vast history especially as it relates to our culture. These two art forms need to be kept alive and passed down to future generations." That's what Spotlight on Jazz & Poetry strives to do. He was born under the sign of Pisces. As is true to most born under that sign, Clayton is a "Dreamer." This trait is evident in his writing and has helped in formulating the concept for his radio program. Clayton is married, has four children, and just recently became a grandfather. Chuk Barber - Part of a Signature Trademark

Playing drums since he was eleven years old, Chukinho has had sticks in his hands for over 40 years. A student of legendary jazz drummer, Hal Blaine, Chukinho was a grounding member in many garage bands in the early 60s. He founded the Virginia/North Carolina-based premiere jazz group “Heroes” in the late 70s. Moving to New Orleans in 1986, he co-founded “Casa Samba,” New Orleans’ first Samba School. After many trips to Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Bahia, to hone his skills, Chukinho was picked from a handful of non-Brazilian born “bateristias” to accompany the World Champion Brazilian Soccer Team on a world-tour as part of their Samba Band or “Bateria.”

He’s played with some of New Orleans’ greatest musicians and bands including: Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Sun Ra, Michael Ray and Cosmic Ray, to name a few. He taught Brazilian Drum and Dance, Capoeira and, along with Baba Kenyatta Simon, created the Academy of African Culture at New Orleans Charter Middle School. Since moving to Portland, Chukinho, along with another New Orleans musician, Tom Sandahl, and 5 of Portland’s finest, created the group, Indigo, fusing Brazilian Bossa Nova with Jazz and funk Beautifully.

The Art of Steven Lopez and Erykah Badu

    Steven Lopez - The Artist

I was fond of art at an early age. When I was 4 years old my mom drew a cartoon character on paper. I nearly passed out from the excitement when she drew it. I remember my grandmother and I would take the bus to the Downtown fashion. I would sit next to the windows and noticed huge murals around the neighborhoods. When I would go to Sunday mass, the local church had a mural that I would look at when I became bored with the priest. This fondness grew into an obsession when I entered middle school. I had experienced a resounding sub-culture that would impact me for the greater part of my life, graffiti. To my family it seemed like a distraction because it got me suspended from school. I didn’t know what I was doing myself so it wasn’t like I could tell them, “Hey it’s okay. I’m going to draw for the rest of my life.”

My relationship with graffiti was a fragile one. At times it seemed more like a passing fad than a communication tool. During the early years my parents didn’t see art as a viable artery in society. I had to do something about this urge before it passed me by. After high school, I made a solo move to Oregon to study art at the community and University levels. The change in my living conditions was a catalyst for me to be proactive in my art (too much rice and peanut butter will do that to you). This helped me develop strong bonds with friends who challenged me to grow. With the help of professors and colleagues I began communicating my art to the community.

I do not paint to be somebody greater than myself. I’m a son, brother, lover and friend first. The real work resides in the relationships I have with people. My paintings are bi-products and extensions of myself. I utilize my art as a vehicle for telling stories. What I learned from them is the substance of my work. When you enter the vehicle, where I take you is the storyline. This is my formula for communication: story, substance then style. My feeling to communicate has catapulted me into the age old story of transformation. My objective is to ease the fear of the unknown and to document the ether that binds our souls. -Steven Lopez

His work has been gaining more recognition. He was featured in Arizemag.com and his latest project entitled "After Midnight", is a fantastic series of female singers such as Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, India Irie, Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott to name a few.

"My “After Midnight’ series is making some headway with some of the singers. The first person to show some love was Erykah Badu on her myspace page and Jill Scott’s website has posted up my video of her portrait and song, “Hate on me”..."

Erykah Badu is signing 100 limited edition prints which will be available for sale mid April. These will be available to the public exclusively at Aftermidnightsoul.com

Erykah Badu and Artist Steven Lopez collaborate for social change from Steven Lopez on Vimeo.

Erykah Badu- Amerykahn Promise from ikeepmoving.com on Vimeo.

Steven is very involved with his community and his vision is to continue working with kids.

"I’m happy to share my gift with others. Sometimes they need encouragement and a helping hand. With out that, how as a society can we say we are successful?”

This trait is evident in his writing and has helped in formulating the concept for his radio program. Clayton is married, has four children, and just recently became a grandfather.

He loves to cook and bake (carrot cake being his specialty)

Spotlight on Jazz & Poetry premiered in April of 2006 and is hosted by Clayton (BigTrigger) Corley Sr. Beginning January 20, 2008, the show will be featured on the new Spotlight on Jazz and Poetry website.

The concept of the show is based on parings of jazz musicians and their poetic contemporaries. During the program, biographical information is provided on each artist, so in a sense you can say that the show is educational as well as entertaining. At Spotlight on Jazz and Poetry, we like to refer to it as EDUTAINMENT .

The goal of the program is to educate everyone, about the history and importance of Jazz and Poetry. Clayton does a lot of research on each artist that is showcased on the program, so he stays pretty busy. He has collected so much music over his lifetime that he probably will never run out of artists to showcase. He is passionate about keeping the history of Jazz and Poetry in the forefront of black culture and consciousness.

The first show highlighted the music of John Coltrane and the poetry of Amiri Baraka. Spotlight on Jazz and Poetry (SOJP) has since featured artists such as Dinah Washington (musician), George Benson (musician), Arine Ward (poet), Stephane Moore (poet), and Lawrence Jones (musician). Leaving no stone unturned, SOJP features both legends and the newer artists in both genres. SOJP is also known for its in-depth interviews with artists such as Nikki Giovanni (poet) and Mulgrew Miller (musician). These interviews provide artists with a forum to talk about their work and the creative process.
