Bruce George *Initial 30 minutes* - Bruce is a visionary, executive producer, writer, poet and activist. His work has been published in major magazines, anthologies, and literary publications. Bruce is the Founder of the critically acclaimed award winning "Russell Simmons's Def Poetry Jam." As an activist Bruce has been and currently is associated with major grassroots organizations that fosters and uplifts people in struggle.


He's also the Founder/Managing Editor of "The Bandana Republic, an Anthology of Poetry & Prose by Gang Members & Their Affiliates."



Abiodun Oyewole - Founding member of the American music and spoken-word group "The Last Poets" (Original group consisted of David Nelson, Gylan Kain, and Abiodun Oyewole. Group was created on the anniversary of Malcolm X's birthday May 19, 1968 in Marcus Garvey Park.)


The group grew to consist of David Nelson, Gylan Kain, Abiodun Oyewole, Felipe Luciano, Umar Bin Hassan, Jalal Nurridin, and Suliamn El Hadi.


Abiodun Oyewole has had a number of projects not under the Last Poets name, such as the CD 25 Years. Oyewole, spent 15 years in the New York school system, also taught at Columbia University.

Louis Reyes Rivera
Poet/essayist Louis Reyes Rivera has been studying his craft since 1960 and teaching it since 1969. The recipient of over 20 awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award (1995), a Special Congressional Recognition Award (1988), and the CCNY 125th Anniversary Medal (1973), Rivera has assisted in the publication of well over 200 books, including John Oliver Killens' Great Black Russian (Wayne State U., 1989), Adal Maldonado's Portraits of the Puerto Rican Experience (IPRUS, 1984), and Bum Rush The Page: A Def Poetry Jam (Crown Publishers, 2001).



Considered by many as a necessary bridge between the African and Latino American communities, he is a professor of Pan-African, African-American, Caribbean and Puerto Rican literature and history whose essays and poems have appeared in numerous publications, including Areyto, Boletin, The City Sun, African Voices, and in five award-winning collections: In Defense of Mumia; ALOUD: Live from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Of Sons And Lovers, Bum Rush The Page, and his own Scattered Scripture.



Keith Roach - Poet, author, activist, Keith has produced a variety of reading series around New York City and is a former long time host of the Nuyorican Poet Cafe "Open Room" and SlamMaster of the Friday night slam and co-curator of the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Poetry & Spoken Word Festival. Currently he co-produces the internet broadcast, NoBoarders Poetry Radio , formerly known as Eadon's Place, and hosts "Conversations with Keith" which airs on NoBoarders Poetry Radio.



Tantra-Zawadi an award winning poet/artist/filmmaker from Brooklyn, New York, has performed to standingroom audiences at venues as far away as South Africa, London, Germany and Toronto.

A seminal funk ensemble, the Fatback Band made many great singles through the '70s and early '80s, ranging from humorous novelty tunes to energetic dance vehicles and even occasional political/message tracks.

The original lineup featured drummer Bill Curtis, trumpeter George Williams, guitarist Johnny King, bassist Johnny Flippin, saxophonist Earl Shelton, and flutist George Adam. Synthesizer player Gerry Thomas, saxophonist Fred Demerey, and guitarist George Victory were integral parts of the group during their peak years.

They began recording for Perception in the early '70s, and had moderate luck with "Street Dance" in 1973. They moved to Event in 1974, and while funk audiences loved such songs as "Wicki-Wacky" and "(Are You Ready) Do the Bus Stop," they didn't generate much sales action. Their first sizable hit was "Spanish Hustle" in 1976, which reached number 12 on the R&B charts. They shortened their name to Fatback in 1977, and landed their first Top Ten R&B hit with "I Like Girls" in 1978.

Their 1979 single "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is widely considered the first rap single in many circles. But their biggest year was 1980. They scored two Top Ten R&B hits with "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)" and "Backstrokin'," their finest tune.

Fatback kept going through the mid-'80s, landing one more Top 20 hit with "Take It Any Way You Can Want It" in 1981. They were backed by the female vocal trio Wild Sugar in 1981-82, and Evelyn Thomas also provided the lead vocal for "Spread Love" in 1985, their last song for Spring. Fatback also recorded a pair of LPs for Cotillion in 1984 and 1985.

Raised in Warwick, New York, about 65 miles north of New York City, Cupéro has been singing since she was four years old. Piano lessons began at nine and then guitar at sixteen, which for her, has been the key to unlock everything. She explains, “Since picking up the guitar, everything has fallen into place – it was the right instrument for me to begin writing songs on, and image-wise, I love it. When I’m playing guitar – that’s the essence of who I am.”

Influenced by everything from modern artists like KT Tunstall and a few classic rock artists, Cupéro saves her biggest praise for the Colombian rock artist Juanes, a winner of seventeen Latin Grammys and who has sold over ten million albums. She says, “I really admire his music and his activism, and the fact that he’s bilingual was the inspiration for me to become a bilingual artist.”

After writing a batch of songs strong enough for her standards, she began sending them to New York City based studios. “I didn’t know who’d give me the time of day,” she says with a laugh. “The team of Patrick Ermlich and E-Shy Gazit were the only ones who got back to me, but when I went down to play for them, it was clear that they were right. We developed a plan right then and there for when I got out of school to go full bore and record.” Recording went smoothly, and as Cupéro exclaims, “Their production really brought my songs to life – they wowed me!”

Being wowed is the operative experience of listening to Cupéro. There’s the catchiness of “I’ve Got Your Number,” originally written for a high school talent show, that has become something of a signature song for her. “When I first played it in front of people,” she remembers, “it had an immediate reaction that really astounded me.” Opening with a hypnotic guitar riff, the song soars upon hitting an unforgettable chorus, punctuated at all times by her commanding vocals. “You’ll Never Be There” has a lilting rhythm that perfectly compliments Cupéro’s tale of heartbreak and unrequited love. And “Life Is A Moment” is a power ballad of exceptional power. Starting the song with just her voice accompanied by piano, Cupéro’s voice connects with the listener directly and holds them as the song builds into a dramatic tour de force, perfectly complementing the message of the song, which as she explains, “You should never stop living for what you want to do.”

Currently enrolled at Siena College, Cupéro has been performing at various shows and benefits for organizations like SAFER (Students Active For Ending Rape), as well as Road Recovery, a drug awareness program who she wrote a song for. But clearly, her eyes are on goals to come. She states, “Right now I’m concentrating on developing a local fanbase and taking my songwriting to the next level – but I want to take it to the highest level I possibly can and win an international fanbase.” While that kind of ambition might be stretch for most artists, given the quality of songs and performances on her debut album, for Cupéro, it all seems very much possible, and within her exceptional reach. In 5th grade she played clarinet, in High School she picked up the Saxophone and she was also the first girl drum major in High School and the lead in the marching band.

While attending the University of Southern California she had trouble with music theory and stopped playing for about 18 years.

Needless to say, she is back with her beautiful soulful tenor sax sound.  She enjoys sharing her music with seniors and children for she is very much involved in the school system.



This spring she will play the National Anthem before the Sacramento River Cats school night out game.

"Music is a wonderful way for self-expression", she says.

I arrived in St. Louis late afternoon on March 17th and settled in at the hotel and stepped out to get some last minute things done.

The next morning I was across the Moonrise Hotel owned by Joe Edwards, who also was the presenter of the awards. I arrived one hour early to ensure I did not miss a thing!

Shortly after getting there, I ran into Robert-Allan Arno who is the group's biographer and we proceeded to join Lamonte and his wife Mieko in their room at the Moonrise Hotel.

It was such a joy to see Lamonte's smiling face. He still has that warm and friendly smile and is still a jokester at heart. We gave each other a big bear hug and exchanged a few words and I took the opportunity to gift him with St. Louis Native Sons, which is a beautiful illustration by our very own Andre Harris.

He was mesmerized... It is very special for it celebrates the three friends who grew up together in St. Louis and it is also a gift in Ron's memory.

Mieko, Lamonte's wife since 1996, who was speaking to other guests, joined us, and I had a chance to finally meet her in person, for I had only spoken to her over the phone.

I used most of the Japanese I know... ohayō gozai masu (Good Morning!)

The festivities were about to start, so we headed across the street as chairs, fans and the media were all waiting for Lamonte and Billy. Lamonte's 96 year old mom sweet Mrs. June McLemore, Lamonte's sister, Ron's grandson, "Sho-Tyme" and niece Karla Townson and many other family members were in attendance.

By that time Joe Edwards was ready to start, the sun had also made it's way through the clouds, warning up this historical day. Mieko, Billy and Lamonte sat in the front row and I and Robert-Allan were right behind them.

The first plaque was presented to Jarred Townson (Sho-Tyme), who is a Rap and R&B artists and he received the award on his grandfather's behalf. Then Lamonte and then Billy received their plaques.

Sadly Marilyn McCoo had a accident a few days prior. She tripped on a rug, fell and broke her hip and Florence LaRue, had a previous engagement in Florida. According to Billy, Marilyn is healing well and will be just fine!

So it was wonderful to see St. Louis Native Sons receive their award plaques in their home town and the star honoring The Fifth Dimension, a six time Grammy award winning vocal group, which has been blessing us with beautiful soulful music since 1965, was finally shinning at 6164 Delmar Blvd.

After the ceremony I was invited to a private luncheon, at the Eclipse restaurant at the Moonrise Hotel, which lasted for about a couple of hours. I was able to get some interviews, promote Andre Harris, whose illustration was a huge hit, promote our calendar, meet and invite a few talented artists.

The next evening, Lamonte had his photo exhibit as a celebration of his 50 years as a photographer capturing the world's beauty and some of his Jet Beauty of the Week models, which I was one...back in 1989.

I was so happy to see our very own Daniel Hodges and wife Deneen and that made the event even more special to me. Lamonte McLemore and Daniel Hodges are a couple of the artists who contributed to the 2011 Calendar for Haiti.

So, this was such a wonderful trip! A chance to see a friend, meet new ones and promote our network.

Harry James Elston was born into a musical family in Dallas, Texas and grew up in San Diego, California.

In his mid teens Elston was part of a group called “Cel Foster and the Audios” which was chosen by the The Johnny Otis Rhythm & Blues Caravan in a talent search. (Otis produced Etta James’ first hit, "Roll With Me, Henry", also known as "The Wallflower" and "Every Beat of My Heart", first recorded by “The Royals” is his most famous composition which became a hit for Gladys Knight.)

In his mid twenties Elston worked as a limousine driver for “The Temptations” and in the early 60’s he LaMonte McLemore, Marilyn McCoo together with Fritz Baskett, Rex Middleton, and Lawrence Summers formed the Hi Fi’s and went on tour with Ray Charles who produced the group’s single “Lonesome Mood”.

In the mid 60’s after leaving the Hi Fi’s, Elston and Floyd Butler joined with Jessica Cleaves and Barbara Jean Love, formed the legendary group “Friends of Distinction” a name which was suggested by Love.

In the late 60’s Hall of Fame football player Jim Brown, who became the groups manager, introduced them to RCA Records and in 1969 their first album, “Grazin”, was released.

The album included the song "Grazing in the Grass" which a top five on both Pop and Soul charts. The song was originally an instrumental composed by Philemon Hou, first recorded by the South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, produced by John Florez, arranged and conducted by Ray Cork Jr. Elston wrote lyrics for the song and sang lead on it. The single sold one million copies gaining the group their first gold record.

The other single was "Going in Circles.", which earned the group their second gold record, which sold over one million copies and peaked at number five on the Top Ten pop and three on the R&B charts. "Going in Circles" was written by Jerry Peters and Anita Poree.

In 1970 the group recorded their third album, "Real Friends" on RCA Records with Charlene Gibson who replaced Barbara Jean Love.  Jessica Cleaves left to join the R&B group Earth, Wind and Fire and later Parliament.

"Love or Let Me Be Lonely", from the album, Real Friends, earned the group a second Top 10 pop hit, featuring Charlene as the lead. "I Need You" was also recorded by the group.

“The Friends were quite prolific from 1969-71, releasing 5 albums (a sixth appeared in 1973). They also released a number of great singles, including "Check It Out" (later remade by Tavares) and a terrific cover of Neil Sedaka's "Time Waits for No One." Their best cuts are excellently compiled in The Best of the Friends of Distinction, which was released in 1996.” Myspace.com/HarryElston

In 1975 the group separated and sadly, On April 29, 1990, Floyd Butler passed away.

Over the next 20 years the groups music was remade by the Gap Band, the late Luther Vandross, Paul Davis and Disney star Raven Simone.



The new Friends of Distinction group which is made up of Berlando Drake, Wendy Smith Brune, Tim Owens and of course Harry Elston brings us great memories and are creating new ones.

Dr. Fuentes manages Antoine Smith, her youngest very talented son, who is an Indie artist on Turn on Records and has a very promising future as a drummer, keyboardist and who is currently seeking a career in Audio Production and Engineering. 

Aeric, is her oldest son who is autistic and has had so many achievements and continues to excel in many of his endeavors which include composing and cooking!  Some of his compositions are "WORLD OF DREAMS," "IF I WERE A BUTTERFLY," and "IN THE MOMENT"

“I am very proud of Aeric's accomplishments throughout his life and I hope that you will enjoy his music!” She says.

Dr. Fuentes is a woman I greatly admire for her exemplary dedication to her family.

Dr. Fuentes' education is through traditional and non- traditional colleges. In technology, she taught on-campus at International Remington College to business students and Orange Education and Recreation Center for Adult Education in elite communities. In technology and education, she has taught at Tri-C Community College-Eastern & Western Campus to the senior citizens for the Encore Program and local communities, Ford Motors, Inc. to ABE students, St. Jerome Catholic School for K-8, and more since 2002.

In addition to technology, Dr. Fuentes has been affiliated in the world of computers for over 20 years. She has provided training to produce computer literacy for all types of students that include some ABE, mainstream, ADD, ADHD, and Autism.

She has volunteered to teach unprivileged students in a community college that were eager to learn computers and other subjects, which she was awarded with a certificate for her dedication and work. Recently, she was presented with an award and membership of the Madison Who’s Who Professionals and Executives 2007-2008, USA Honors Society 2009-2010, and other affiliations that present web awards and memberships for business.

Dr. Fuentes is a freelance medical researcher and has written a book called “Autism” which was inspired by her son Aeric.

Through her research, she has compiled a great deal of information from doctors, professors, medical researchers, scientists, up-to-date theories, and has shared a brief synopsis on her son in her book.

“After reading AUTISM, you will be more knowledgeable about this disorder.” Says Dr. Fuentes.

Dr. Fuentes wrote AUTISM to help parents, schools, other professionals, and her family to understand the true meaning to this life-long subject.

The book includes helpful methods for managing behavior, important facts about autism, foods that slows down the brain, names of famous people with autism, and much more.

Darryl Arnez (DA) Williams grew up in Chestnut Hill, a suburb of the musically rich city of Philadelphia, P.A. and was born in a broadcasting / musical family.

His father, Kae (loud mouth) Williams Sr., ( February 4th 1921 - December 29, 1989) was a pioneer radio personality and one of the earliest DJs to play the Blues. He was instrumental in the careers of legendary artists such as Solomon Burke , B.B. King, Doo-Wop group - The Silhouettes, Yvonne Baker, the Sensations and was instrumental in starting Mary Mason's career in radio at WHAT radio.

His brother was Ulysses Kae Williams Jr., (March 7, 1956 - July 11, 2008) a well known record producer and musician who was the keyboardist for the musical group Breakwater, formed in 1971 and the first African American band signed to Arista Records under Clive Davis.

Today DA, carries on the legacy via WDKKRADIO.com and is passionate about the history which in general is not being told by the black DJs of today. He also hosts a BlogTalkRadio show featuring many of the artists he met thoughout his life.

DA's interests also include developing a systematic program that draws from fields such as Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Systems theory, Behavioral psychology and Hypnotherapy. He calls this program "The Conceptual Change Technique ™."

Joan is a Sagittarian from New York City. A vocalist, composer, author, and is the founder of the non-profit organization WOMEN IN JAZZ SOUTH FLORIDA, INC. that promotes women who compose and perform jazz and blues music, globally.

The ultimate goal of the organization is to build a state-of-the-arts Museum of Women in Music that will house permanent and traveling exhibits, library, archives, performance and rehearsal space, and a place for female musicians to gather and share their experiences with the community-at-large.

Her composition Sweet Return is the title of a 1983 Freddie Hubbard recording for Atlantic Records. Released in 1998, her first solo album (Feelin' Good) was cut in Sicily with a talented group of Italian musicians.

She co-produced and co-hosted the community based talk show Let's Get Serious for WLRN-CH 36/37 in Miami. In 1998, she produced and spearheaded the first annual Gaiafest Women's Jazz Festival in Fort Lauderdale featuring Dakota Staton and other women jazz artists.

Joan now hosts a weekly, online radio show - MUSICWOMAN LIVE! that features women who compose and perform their own music and men who support them. The show began on July 16, 2008 on BlogTalkRadio.com/MusicWoman and has featured dozens of female musicians, vocalists and composers.

She has toured five continents and 15 countries including the U.S.A., eight European countries, Brazil, Mexico, Ghana, Gambia, South Africa, China and Japan, with her swinging brand of jazz and blues.

Joan's book, In Pursuit of a Melody, is review of this jazz vocalist and composer's brilliant career and travels. It is dramatic and humorous and contains Joan's poetry and songs, written over the course of 28 years. It also contains two lectures that she's given to over 5,000 children and college students, in U.S., Switzerland, Sicily, China and Japan: WOMEN IN JAZZ and SO, YOU WANT TO BE A SINGER? Her workshops are dynamic and educational, highlighting the pitfalls and benefits of the music business. She contends that, "Knowing music theory is a step in the right direction for any singer who truly wants to excel in the world of music!"

Joan has a B.A. in Communications and Music from LaSalle University, (Philadelphia) and a Master’s in Communications from Florida Atlantic University. Joan studied piano, composition and theory with pianist Gerald Price, and harp with Caliope Proios. She also studied ballet and modern dance with Bernice Johnson and Lavern Porter, and African dance with Dinizulu. She's performed on television, radio and on stage at the Blue Note (NYC).
