We all know why firefighters exist in our cities but we might not all know the importance of their jobs. Firefighters primarily extinguish fires that threaten civilian populations and property and to rescue people from danger. These hard workers used to only be men and were referred to as firemen, however, now many women fight the fires that threaten our cities so the team was changed from firemen to firefighters.

To become a firefighter a college degree is not required however some do go to college and earn an associate or a bachelor degree in fire science. In these classes the soon to be firefighters will learn things such as how to control a fire with equipment or how to inform their communities on how to prevent fires. A college degree is not required to become a firefighter because most skills are learned on the job or in training. There are several different types of firefighters found around the world including the following; career firefighters, volunteer firefighters and retained firefighters. Firefighters also on average work a fifty-six hour week with eight to twenty-four hour shift. Firefighters serve in an important spot in our communities and are vital to the safety of our families and friends.
