Executive Coaching Insights to help you become a better leader.

Today was my 75th interview on Blog Talk Radio. Ken Berrick, CEO of Seneca Children and Family Servicesand newly-elected member of an Alameda County school board, spoke about his leadership path. As a young man of 29, he found himself working in a nonprofit agency that was about to shutter its doors. The agency cared for troubled children and youth who had so many losses in their lives that they were  in serious trouble. Ken and his colleagues decided to start their own nonprofit agency to make sure that the children did not lose their home. Now, 23 years later, Ken runs one of the most effective agencies in California with a staff of 800.

But, back then, when he was first starting out, Ken began to realize just how much he didn't know about management and leadership. So, what did he do? Found coaches--one to teach him about financial management, and others to teach him additional basic skills. Some will argue that this was consulting or mentoring. I don't believe that it matters what you call it. The issue is that all executives can benefit from a well-trained professional coach to help them develop as leaders.

It's interesting that in hard times, the first thing that is usually cut in an organization is training--one of the most critical aspects of managing human resources effectively. Now with executive coaching becoming more widely used for senior executives in both for profit and nonprofit organizations, it may be tempting to see coaching as a luxury to be cut even before training.

While it is definitelyl self-serving, I also fervently believe that cutting coaching should be one of the last things cut. More than ever, senior management needs to display extraordinary leadership skills, wisdom, patience and vision. An Executive Coach can be pivotal in serving as a safe, confidential sounding board for new ideas as well as a place to vent,. But most important in critical times, the highly trained, experienced Executive Coach is the only person in the CEO or other senior management's lives that will tell the truth. In other words, give objective, honest, direct and specific feedback about how the manager  is coming across in a time of crisis. The seasoned Executive Coach can make the difference between losing or keeping top managers. An Executive Coach an also be instrumental in preventing senior managers from allowing their emotions to run away with them.

Think carefully before you reduce or eliminate executive coaching in your organizations. And, if you don't have an Executive Coach, think extremely carefully about whether you can afford NOT to have one!

If you'd like to discuss Executive Coaching for your organizaion, give me a call: 310.375.1210. My 30 years experience as a CEO, my masters and law degrees and my intensive training to become a certified professionalk coach can help you  and your executive team become better leaders.
