I am honored to announce that Dr. Warren Bennis will be joining me as my guest in September 2009. Instead of his usual focus on the art of leadership, I will be asking him about his own development as a leader, who his mentors were, how his philosphy evolved. Be sure to check out his new book, "The ESSENCE of Bennis."

THE HIDDEN COSTS OF PERFECTIONISM with Dr. Kenneth Cole

Wow--what a treat! Dr. Kenneth Cole brought some exceptional insights to our interview today on "The Hidden Costs of Perfectionism." While Dr. Cole approaches this topic through the lens of psychology and psychotherapy, there is so much applicability for all of us and particularly those in management/leadership positions.

What are we expecting of ourselves? of our direct reports? Are our expectations reasonable and related to stated goals, or are they are own internal needs? Here is an ideal area for executive coaching. The caveat is that if the executive's perfectionism is severely maladaptive and dysfunctional, then therapy is a better alternative. However, as I said in the interview, some individuals use both therapy and coaching as tools for self improvement.

This is an interview worth listening to more than once because of the nuggets of wisdom laced throughout Dr. Cole's comments. Also, check out the reference he provided: "Perils of Perfectionism" available through ExecutiveInsights.com. I thought he said "Pearls" of Perfectionism but as we agreed, that's a whole other topic!

Again, my thanks to Ken for his skills as an interviewee as well as his psychological wisdom and ability to communicate.

My next guest is Susan Burden speaking about the impact on employers with employees struggling with aging parents.

Don't forget to order your advance copy of my new book, "Leading the Way to Success," by visiting my website: www.coachjudynelson.com. And while you're there, read a little about executive coaching and contact me to discuss whether that might be a good step for you to take.  877.yesJudy or Judy@CoachJudyNelson.com

Until next Saturday...have a great week!

    Best,

    Judy

Don't miss "The Hidden Costs of Perfectionism" with Dr. Kenneth Cole

Dr. Kenneth Cole is back with us on a new but very relevant topic. In our last session, Dr. Cole described a relatively new kind of therapeutic treatment called ACT. In this conversation, we learn his views on what all of us, especially executives, pay for trying to be perfect.

THE HIDDEN COSTS OF PERFECTIONISM with Dr. Kenneth Cole

Saturday's interview with Dr. Kenneth Cole touches on a subject that is often discussed but rarely assessed in terms of hidden costs. What is the subject? Perfectionism. How many people suffer with this affliction? How many accomplish wonders because of it? I know of no study that has looked at either of these questions, but I'm guessing the numbers are in the millions. But how many of these individuals have stopped to look at what their perfectionism is costing them emotionally, physically and perhaps even in real dollars? I'll be that number is low.

Dr. Cole has been looking at perfectionism for many years and will share some of his learning and insights in this interview. If he can also offer strategies that executives can use to maximize the positives in perfectionism and reduce the negatives, Dr. Cole may become internationally famous!

Join me Saturday, April 26, 2008 from at 9:30 a.m. for another fascinating interview on "Leading the Way to Success" with Coach Judy Nelson!

    Best regards,

Another exciting guest coming up: Mariel Hemingway!

I am honored to report that my friend, Mariel Hemingway, has agreed to be a guest on my web radio show to talk about her path to success. We are still working out the date but probably around mid to late May. This will be a special, longer show because of all the exciting things that Mariel is doing. If you can't wait to learn more, try out her website at www.marielhemingway.com and take a look at her new healthy food venture. And don't forget to watch for the interview on "Leading the Way to Success!"

I would love to hear from you about your successes and how you got there! You can also visit my website, www.coachjudynelson.com to think about whether executive coaching is something you might like to try.

Lessons from Successful Guests and News of Upcoming!

My guest today, Dr. Marie Marley, provided some helpful insights not only into the world of successful grantwriting but also into success generally.  A successful winner of 7 figure awards from private foundations, Dr. Marley did not start out as a grantwriter. In fact, she received her Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Cincinnatti over 30 years ago.  Landing a grantwriting job only 2 years later was a "happy accident" to use her words and she has been successfully writing major grants ever since. Clearly, her ability to research, sift through and condense information, and assist her colleagues to build programs that are both mission-driven and fundable is a fundamental skill.

I wonder how many leaders got to where they are by "happy accidents." I've heard it said that most men plan their careers while women just "fall" into them. While this falling into the grant writing field was the case with Dr. Marley, I know many women who carefully plan their careers, yet are open to "happy accidents," and at the same time learn from and take advantage of not so happy accidents.

Now I'll probably try to learn more from future guests about whether there were happy accidents in their career path and if so, what they did to maximize the benefits.

Speaking of future guests, there are something exciting interviews coming up.

Next week, Dr. Kenneth Cole will be back with me, talking about the challenges of supervising graduate psychology residents in a medical setting. Dr. Cole has been on the program twice, talking about the fascinating aspects of ACT--a relatively new psychological theory and one with multiple practical applications.

On May 3rd, Susan Burden will be my guest and we will be talking about the challenges for the employer of having babyboomers on staff who are having to manage aging parents--a serious issue for thousands and one that will only get more complicated.

Author of "The Hunter," Chris Keane who is also a successful screenwriter, will be with me on May 10 with some very intriguing topics about how he became successful. "The Hunter" was made famous as a movie starring Steve McQueen.Having spent a week with Chris in a screenwriting class in Maui, I can guarantee that you will get a few laughs and much wisdom by tuning in. Not only a gifted screenwriter, Chris (I occasionally slip and call him "Steve") has a wonderful sense of humor--and an exciting new book out.

Still other great guests to come. Don't take a chance of missing any of them!

    Judy Nelson

How Do Successful Grantwriters Do What They Do?

New technology to enhance success for executive presentations

Many thanks to Todd Skiles for being my guest on my weekly web radio show, "Leading the Way to Success," Saturday, April 5, 2008. Todd is a senior executive with Innovision Inc. in Commerce, Michigan and is the designer of a fabulous wireless interactive keypad system.

I am fortunate to be a beta tester of this product and am an enthusiastic user. My presentations and management trainings have been dramatically improved by the use of this instantaneous response device. It was fun getting to know more about Todd and to hear his thoughts and ideas about the power of this technology as well as how it might look in the future.

May 3rd on "Leading the Way to Success," my successful guest will be Susan Burden, the dynamic and engaging director of a thriving organization whose mission is to deliver preventive health services. Far too often, we wait until the disease or illness or maladaptive behavior has become life threatening and/or life destroying before we offer services. Sue is the CEO of Beach Cities Health District, serving the South Bay area of Los Angeles.

The topic she has chosen is exciting and one that I don't believe has been addressed much at all. She will be talking about "the impact of aging parents on their sons/daughters in the workplace and the implication for employers." There are no doubt millions of sons and daughters across the country and internationally who worry daily about aging parents. But who worries about them? And what are the implications for workplace performance--and preventive strategies?

Do not miss this interview with Sue Burden on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008, from 9:30-9:45 a.m.!

P.S. My apologies to the caller who sent in chat messages and I did not notice until after the show. I promise I will be more on the alert next time so please try again.

Until Saturday morning on "Leading the Way to Success,"
