I am honored to announce that Dr. Warren Bennis will be joining me as my guest in September 2009. Instead of his usual focus on the art of leadership, I will be asking him about his own development as a leader, who his mentors were, how his philosphy evolved. Be sure to check out his new book, "The ESSENCE of Bennis."

Chris Keane, author and screenwriter, with a new book, "ROMANCING THE A-LIST..."

I'm not able to formally schedule my guests over 30 days in advance on blogtalkradio.com but I can't wait to tell you who will be on my show, "Leading the Way to Success," on May 10th.  He is Chris Keane and he is a delight. Chris is the author of "The Hunter," the movie made famous by Steve McQueen.

I had the great good fortune to study under Chris's tutelage in Maui for a week several years ago. I signed up for his script writing course in an attempt to zero in on my writing "genre" as they say. I worked very hard and learned a lot but had no clue just how much work scriptwriting is. Nevertheless, we've stayed in touch and now he has a new book out called, "ROMANCING THE A-LIST: Writing the Script The Big Stars Want to Make." The book will be available at Amazon.com in April 2008.

You might expect an author with another new book on the stands to only want to promote his book but Chris has agreed to focus on what led him to success. Here are the topics he gave me that figured high in his professional and personal development:

"1. The Colliding Trains Love Letter
     2.   How Little Red Riding Hood Made Me A Writer
     3.   When Things Were Never as They Seemed on the Beach at Biarritz
     4.   Star Kills Aura: When the Colt .45 went off at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and Nothing Was Ever the Same Again."

I'm so curious about what he says to say on those topics that I'm not sure I can wait until May 10th!

However, I have several exciting guests scheduled prior to the interview with Chris. This Saturday, I will be talking to a senior executive of Good Will Industries who is in the process of her own professional development and constantly strengthening her already strong leadership skills. Teri Kelsall is a warm, funny, bright and highly capable leader who will provide a candid look at the joys and sorrows of professional development.

On April 5th, my guest is Todd Skiles, an executive with Innovision, Inc. This is another situation like the interview with Christina Merkley, where I am introducing you to a product--not because this show is for sale--but because these are folks who have developed unique tools that can help promote successful leadership.

For the last year I have been a beta tester for Todd's product, called "Keypoint." It is a technical way for my audiences to have instant feedback about the group's opinions, attitutudes and or knowledge. Using a small numbered keypad, seminar participants can punch in their answers and within seconds see a powerpoint slide in chart form reporting the data. The impact on audiences is amazing. I know you will enjoy hearing Todd's story about the development of this technology as well as his own keys to success.

    To be continued!

Leading the Way to Success through a new medium: graphic facilitation

Thank you, Christina Merkley, for being my guest on "Leading the Way to Success," the new name for my weekly web radio show on Saturday mornings. Christina is a Graphic Faciliator, Coach and Mapmaker who lives and works in Victoria British, Columbia, Canada.

I found out about graphic recording/facilitation through my friend and colleague, Martine Singer, Executive Director of Hollygrove, the fabulous organization where I was formerly the CEO. Martine had attended a seminar that used graphic recording and she shared the notes with me. Amazing! Beautifully colored graphs, stick figures, charts and shapes, depicting the "takeaways" of the meeting--those kernels of thought that can change the way we think and do business.

After talking with the U.S. leaders in this new profession, I was quickly given the name of Christina Merkley by almost everyone with whom I had contact.  "She's the best," several said. And I agree. I have taken two lessons in graphic facilitation from Christina, via the web, and whole new worlds of ideas opened up for me.

With a Master's in Organizational Development plus extensive training in graphic facilitation, Christina combines both with a marvelous result.

To actually see her work, go to either or both of her websites and I'm guessing you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was: www.shift-it-coach.com and www.makemark.com (or as Christina says instead of www: "dub, dub, dub!" Now why didn't I think of that?!)

While you're on the web, don't forget to check out my website: www.coachjudynelson.com. And to order an advance, signed copy of my new book, "Leading the Way to Success," (my co-authors include Warren Bennis and Chicken Soup's Jack Canfield!), send your name and email to: info@coachjudynelson.com.

Again, thanks for listening to "Leading the Way to Success," every Saturday morning from 9:30-9:45 PST. Oh, and please tell your friends!

    Best,

    Judy

Tired of Boring Meetings and Powerpoint? Learn about Graphic Recording

    "LEADING THE WAY TO SUCCESS"

Today I have an exciting announcement! You may have noticed that my show has a new title, "Leading the Way to Success." That is also the title of my new book to be published in July 2008! My eleven co-authors of "Leading the Way to Success" include Warren Bennis, the internationally-regarded USC management professor and author, and the author of the "Chicken Soup" series, Jack Canfield! I am honored to be in the company of such distinguished experts writing on the subject of leadership.

In September I will be holding my first book signing at a Conference in Tampa, Florida where I am a Plenary speaker. Seven hundred executives will be attending this 3rd national conference on Women, Addiction and Recovery and I am honored to have been invited to address them on the subject of leadership.

Back to the book, my chapter is entitled "Emotionally-Intelligent Management." In a conversation with the immensely-talented publisher, David Wright, President of Insight Publishing, I talk about emotional intelligence (or "EQ") and the role it has played in my own development as a leader--both on a professional as well as a personal level. Essentially, the concepts of EQ have allowed me to develop the maturity so vital to excellence and I feel fortunate that I have "Leading the Way to Success" as a vehicle to share what I have learned.

But here's the deal: the number of copies is limited! So, here's you chance to order your copy in advance. The book is a bargain at only $21.95. Reserve your copy now by sending an email to info@coachjudynelson.com!

Next time, I will share my tidbits from the book that can help you in your journey to leadership excellence.

Don't forget to tune in to the show this week to hear my exceptional guest talk about a new technique for turning those "pleeeease-don't-read-your-powerpoint" meetings into  memorable, colorful and engaging events.

What It's Like To Be: 1. A Kid Today and 2. A Professional, Now At-Home-Mom

For this show, I have two exceptional guests. First, an expert in kidness will join us. My handsome young grandson is visiting from the heartland in Kansas and will first report on the KU game last night, then on body surfing. My second guest is Susan Tyler Johnson, a superb social work professional, now a fulltime mom, speaking about switching roles, how NYC differs from L.A. and more!

  • Date / Time:

    Radio interviewing

Each week I interview a fascinating new guest and I learn so much. One thing I'm learning is that 15 minutes may not be enough time for a guest to explain their topic. I chose the 15 minute time frame on purpose. My thought was that everyone is so busy--both the guests and potential listeners--that 15 minutes might be an incentive to not only take the time to be interviewed but to tune in. I still think that's true in most cases, particularly since there's always the opportunity for part 2 or part 3 in future weeks.

The interview this morning with Dr. Eileen Mayers Pasztor, Professor at California State University Long Beach, Department of Social Work, is a good example of the program being too short. Eileen has a wealth of information on so many subjects--as do all of my guests for that matter--that there wasn't enough time for her to even list all of the areas where she has had such an impact.

Thoughts to ponder. If anyone has suggestions, send me a line.

    Judy

  • Original Air Date:
