Sue is the founder of Harvard Sweet Boutique is a gourmet all-natural dessert company that offers hand-made goodies for any occasion. This is especially noteworthy because she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It impacts Sue’s everyday life, requiring her to wear an insulin pump and calculate the carbs in everything she eats so she can pump in the appropriate amount of insulin to manage her blood sugar. Although Type 1 diabetes is typically diagnosed in children and young adults, Sue was diagnosed in 2001 at the age of 39. Going through the experience and learning to live with the disease gave her a new outlook on life. Deciding to live life to the fullest, Sue left her job as a software engineer in corporate America to spend more time with her children. While adjusting to the lifestyle of a stay-at-home mom, she quickly realized her hobby of baking was something she was deeply passionate about. She started testing recipes for decadent brownies and gourmet cookies. In 2007 – at the age of 45 – she took a leap of faith and launched her own gourmet dessert company. Harvard Sweet Boutique has become a huge success as Sue has taken it from home recipe to national brand with features in national magazines like Every Day with Rachel Ray and InStyle. She even used her diagnosis as an inspiration to create low-carbohydrate treats for others with diabetes, working with nutritionists at the Joslin Diabetes Center to develop a line of low-carb sweets with all-natural, high-quality gourmet ingredients. In November 2012, Sue also opened Harvard Sweet Boutique’s first brick-and-mortar store in Hudson, Mass. The storefront offers one-of-a-kind breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert options, as well as cakes, dessert platters, and custom-built gifts for special occasions.
