Normal, IL – Long before they were buzz words, the mind-body connection – the link between our physical and emotional health – has been an integral part of the nursing profession.
According to Kathryn Tornquist, nursing is the original holistic and preventative profession, focused as much on preventing disease as it has been healing since its inception. As a Nurse Psychotherapist, Tornquist has familiarity with both the hard and soft sciences to explore all aspects of health.
“If you’re not feeling good emotionally, you’re not going to feel good physically,” says Tornquist. “The philosophies of nursing are essential to how I approach my work.”
Tornquist is the founder of Solution Focused Counseling, a private counseling practice specializing in individuals, couples and families. With her unique approach to counseling, Tornquist helps her clients articulate what they want to be different in their lives and identify what the evidence will be when they’ve achieved it.
“Almost everyone comes focused on the problems,” says Tornquist. “I often have to bring them back to the central question: ‘What will it look like when you these problems are solved?’ If we don’t know where we’re going, it’s pretty hard to create the path from here to there.”
While clients visit her for a variety of reasons from anxiety and depression to challenges in relationships, Tornquist’s approach is always to keeps her clients focused on how to make the most of their lives moving forward.
“Each and every one of us is so much more than we think we are,” says Tornquist. “There are so many resources available to us that we don’t know exist, let alone how to access. I use my knowledge and skills to help folks access those resources.”
