The first incursion into American politics by Marxists was the 48ers, who were wedded to the ideas of centralized government, learned from Marx, then proselytizing in Europe. The years of the War mark changes in the power of the Federal government to tax, introduced the concept of regulating people and their businesses through licensing and direct control using a regulatory infrastructure which claimed the powers of the states which was not supported by the Constitution. Additionally, a model for corporate power and profit was introduced and grew over the succeeding decades to entirely engulf the original form and institutions of America. The first, and largest of these, remains in the institutions of finance and banking. Second, was the rapid build out of multiple corporations in conjunction with the massive give-away of land as part of the surge into Railroad construction, financed by government.
