Call in to speak with the host
Join us this Wednesday, the 12th of June, at 1 PM MT as we invite in the Spirit of the Sacred Clown: the Heyoka. Quentyn Webb, Mountain Shadow Wolf, of Vermont will join us as a guest as he shares this medicine with the circle from his point of view and experience as a free spirit and contrary medicine person.
The Heyoka speaks, moves and reacts in an opposite fashion to the people around him/her. It is not a spirit that people who do not understand this medicine wish to meet; it usually appears to people when Heyoka wishes to take something from you or cause some sort of mayhem. Some people have learned to respect Heyoka enough to leave this respected one be, avoiding as much as possible. Others, in the Lakota teachings, know the Heyoka shows when someone or some group needs his medicine. Heyoka is a very wise teacher for those willing to listen and understand. Heyoka does the unexpected to bring attention to these needs in people. Question: Do we need to avoid the energy that is not familiar to our everyday life or not and, what are the consequences of this choice?
Heyokas are thought of as being contrary in nature. This spirit is often manifested by doing things backwards or unconventionally—riding a horse backwards, wearing clothes inside-out, or speaking in a backwards language. For example, if food were scarce, a Heyoka would sit around and complain about how full he was; during an intense heat heat wave a Heyoka will shiver with cold and put on gloves and cover himself with a thick blanket.
During the Sun Dance, the Heyoka dances backwards.
