    Date / Time:

    The Twelve days of Christmas

Symbols usually convey information and sometimes, emotion, their meaning often allowing for differing interpretations. Perhaps only an urban legend, the "secret meaning" of words to "The Twelve Days of Christmas" can be turned into a lively game for children and adults alike. As a pre-game warmup, players might be asked: "When do the twelve days of Christmas begin?" "When do they end?" "What is the last day called?"* Then, see how quickly they (and you) can master these symbols drawn from Christmas legends and traditions.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me -- All gifts are from God, our true love.
A Partridge in a Pear Tree -- The partridge is to remind us of Christ the Lord.
Two Turtledoves -- The Old and New Testaments reveal God's love for us.
Three French Hens -- The three gifts are Faith, Hope and Charity.
Four Calling Birds -- The birds proclaim the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Five Golden Rings -- The Pentateuch contains the first five books of the Old Testament: The Torah or The Laws, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Six Geese A-laying -- To remind us of the six days of Creation.
Seven Swans Swimming -- These are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude (strength), knowledge, godliness and fear (respect).
Eight Maids A-milking -- Eight gifts to make us happy are the eight Beatitudes, Blessed are: the poor in spirit; those who mourn; the meek; those who hunger and thirst after righteousness; the merciful; those who are pure in heart; the peace makers and those who are persecuted for my name's sake.
Nine Ladies Dancing -- The fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23 are: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Humility and Self Control. Ten Lords A-leaping - The ten lords represent the Ten Commandments.
Eleven Pipers Piping -- The eleven pipers remind us of the disciples who went out and spread the Good News to the world.
Twelve Drummers Drumming --The twelve articles of our faith as expressed in the Apostles' Creed: "We believe...in God the Father; Creator; God the Son; Crucified, died, buried; raised from the dead; ascended into heaven; God the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic Church; communion of saints; forgiveness of sins; resurrection of the body; and life everlasting." †

Love you All  Have a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year
