I love the scriptures!!!
The Hebrews grow in number and the new king does not know Joseph. He only knows that the heartiness and numbers of his slaves could prove the downfall of Egyptians. So he tries to get rid of them by giving them greater work and even by getting rid of the boy babies as they are born. One survives and is raised in the house of Pharaoh after he is weaned.
The talents create a powerful metaphor for our lives. We have been sent here with talents and, I believe, with weaknesses that are given to us and we are to use them to build the kingdom of God. We do this by first bringing ourselves unto him and then by bringing others into the gospel.
The following words of Christ repeat the concept by sorting out the people of the world by who helped his fellow man and who did not. Those who did shall "inherit the kingdom of God prepared from before the foundation of the world". Do we reach out to others as we can in our circumstances? It sort of makes me shudder when I thought of Visiting Teaching or Home Teaching as I was reading through those that we should visit.
Home and Visiting Teaching is the program set up to look after one another. I am afraid these responsibilities are too often neglected by those who have accepted the call. It makes me want to be extremely diligent in my Visiting Teaching as well as looking for ways to serve and to live so that people can see the teachings of Christ in me.
