  Meet Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu & Sai Browne

  Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu Bio Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu was born in Chicago, Illinois June 15, 1953. He was raised in a two-parent home. His father was born in Texas and gave him high expectations. His mother was born in Ohio and loved him unconditionally. Kunjufu has one sister who is an officer with a Chicago Utility company.  Dr. Kunjufu was an honor roll elementary student at Burnside and was promoted from sixth to eighth grade. He never missed a day of school. He attended Harlan H.S. and was a track star. He graduated in 1970 and attended Illinois State University majoring in Economics and Business Administration. His speaking career literally began when he joined the debate team, where he won numerous awards. Dr. Kunjufu always wanted to attend a Black college and in 1973 during his junior year he enrolled in the exchange program and attended Morgan State University. He immersed himself in Africentricity, legally changed his name, became a vegetarian, and resided in a juvenile delinquent center where he mentored Black boys. He returned to Illinois State in 1974 and graduated. He founded Unity, a Black cultural organization. He taught in an Africentric school from 1974-1980. Kunjufu then founded African American Images, Inc. He enrolled in Union Graduate School and earned his doctorate in 1984. He has written approximately 30 books, spoken at most universities, and has been blessed to preach in hundreds of pulpits. Kunjufu is happily married to his best friend and business partner, has two adult sons and a wonderful grandson. He is an avid tennis player and has yet to miss a day of work. He is a born again Christian and a faithful member of Living Word Christian Center. He mentors boys in the Community of Men organization he started many years ago.   Best-selling author Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu has released the sequel to Adam Where Are You: Why Most Black Men Don’t Go To Church.  The book is titled Developing Strong Black Male Ministries.  Why are most churches 66 percent female? Are worship services geared toward elders and women?  Kunjufu is concerned that the group causing the greatest havoc in our communities-adolescent males are least represented in church.

   

  I love the way the author has laid out the book.  The chapters include Biblical Truths, A Masculine Jesus, What Men Need, Male Trends, Adam Where Are You, Male Ministries, Teenage male Ministries, Young adult ministries, Prison-Drug Ministries, Elder ministries, Homosexuality, and Epilogue.  I would buy the book just for the Masculine Jesus chapter.  Kunjufu provides images of an Africentric Jesus turning over the tables in the sanctuary, calming the storm, and rising from the dead.  I believe every man should see this.

   

  The author is equally concerned about adult and young African American males.  He raises a very poignant question-are rappers and gangs raising our youth?  What can the church do to circumvent this?  Are there effective ministries nationwide that are attractive to adolescent males?  Kunjufu provides numerous examples of these excellent ministries. 

   

  I thought the author did a great job on the delicate issue of homosexuality.  Kunjufu is very concerned about AIDS being the number one killer in Black America.  He writes about the 300,00 former inmates released annually many who are HIV infected.  At the same time, he holds the church spiritually accountable.

   

  I would recommend this book for every Christian, all African American males, and anyone concerned about the physical, mental, and spiritual development of African American males.

  Deborah Smith Pollard, associate professor of English literature and humanities at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, is also a successful gospel concert producer and host of a popular Sunday morning gospel show on Detroit's FM 98 WJLB.
  
  Add "author" to her list of accolades.
  
  When the Church Becomes Your Party is Pollard's behind-the-scenes look at contemporary gospel music, the first book (to my knowledge) to focus its lens exclusively on the multi-faceted gospel scene of today.
  
  According to the press release, "Although the flashy clothing, informal language, and elaborate stage presentation found in some of the newest gospel music may surprise some worshippers, author Deborah Smith Pollard argues that this new aesthetic rests on the same Christian principles as more traditional forms and successfuly extends gospel's message to a wider and younger audience."
  
  Pollard "draws on Detroit's thriving gospel scene as well as her knowledge of the national gospel music industry to identify important trends in each area and trace the cultural transformation that brought them about. In addition, Pollard includes interviews with contemporary gospel artists, allowing them to explain why they rap, make particular choices in attire, or participate in gospel radio, praise and worship, or gospel musical plays."
  
  Gospel music legend and historian Horace Clarence Boyer commented, "There is no doubt that 'today's gospel is not your mother's gospel' so we should be thankful that we have Deborah Smith Pollard's When the Church Becomes Your Party to serve as our interpreter...."
  
  Pollard's book is an important companion for gospel music historians, announcers, and enthusiasts who want to better understand the connection between today's gospel music and its antecedents. In other words, the link between the artistry of Thomas Dorsey and Tye Tribbett is stronger than one might suspect.

  The Gospel According To 'Ebony' Is Minus Vickie Winans

  Flying always affords me an opportunity to catch up on my magazine reading.

  During my flight on Wednesday to London I read 'Ebony' magazine's August 2008 issue.

  The special collector's edition of the magazine has eight different covers and features "The 25 Coolest Brothers of All Time."

  Inside the issue, there was a great article about "The Women of Gospel." I'm always excited when mainstream outlets recognize the gospel music industry in a significant way.

  Unfortunately, as much as I loved the article, I have to admit that I was a bit surprised realizing that a story recognizing "women running the business of gospel music" left out one of the industry's hardest working woman -- Vickie Winans!

  Not to take anything away from the women actually featured on the list, which include Vicki Mack Lataillade, Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, CeCe Winans, The Clark Sisters, Shirley Caesar, Dottie Peoples, Albertina Walker, Dorothy Norwood, the late Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, Teresa Hairston, Demetrius Alexander-Stewart and Tara Griggs MaGee.

  They've all earned their respective place on it!

  But not including Winans on a list of female power players is like omitting Tyra Banks from a list of models that have expanded beyond fashion.

  There are a half dozen or so other female power movers in the gospel industry that some could argue were overlooked.

  (Ladies like Veda Brown (Black Gospel Promo), Prophetess Juanita Bynum, Lisa Collins ('Gospel Industry Roundup'), Jackie Patillo (Zomba Gospel), Tramaine Hawkins, Neily Dickerson (The nd. Company), Melanie Clark (Gospelflava.com), Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Melanie Few (Results Inc.) all come to mind.)

  But not including Winans, in my opinion, is a glaring oversight!

  The 53-year-old Detroit native has changed the way female artists conduct business in gospel music.

  She's called the "Hardest Working Woman in Gospel" because not only does Winans sing, but she manages herself, does her own bookings, routes her own tours, negotiates lucrative endorsement deals, runs a record label and markets products and merchandising to enhance her brand.

  In addition to her countless Stellar Awards, Grammy nominations and numerous other accolades for her music; Winans has recorded comedy CDs, workout videos and has co-directed and financed her own music videos.

  And I am sure the 'We Shall Behold Him' singer is not sitting anywhere worrying about what I hope was an accidental snub. I doubt that very seriously!

  Because if you know anything about Winans, you understand that she was somewhere shipping off a contract or closing a deal with an automotive company to sponsor her next tour.

  In actuality, she's really the type to start her own magazine and create her own list just because she can.

  So I applaud 'Ebony' for stepping outside the box and showcasing gospel in this issue, but I hope the next go around a faux pas like this one will not happen again.

  Meet Valerie Coleman, Pen of the Writer Founder

  Valerie L. Coleman has been called to help writers get their books published. Walking in her purpose, she helped to establish a publishing company for Christian books and plays. She edited manuscripts, handled financial matters, ensured the accuracy of print specifications and managed book inventory. Coleman has since spread her wings and established her own company, Pen Of the WritER or POWER, InfiniPromoter’s 2008 Best Publisher. Coleman has coached hundreds of aspiring authors through the process of writing and publishing. In addition to one- on-one consultations, she conducts workshops that provide step-by-step instructions on prepping, printing and pricing literary works. Her first compilation, Blended Families An Anthology, released October 2006 (ISBN-13: 978-0-978-6066-0-2). Stories from novice writers and published authors from across the nation minister to the unique demands of blended or stepfamilies. This book has won numerous awards including the Black Christian Books Distributor’s Top 50 Small- Independent Publishers Bestsellers (Non-fiction) and Christian Small Publisher’s Association Nonfiction 2008 Book of the Year.
