Black church folk dictionary... Current mood: amused Category: Religion and Philosophy Anointing: Used to describe any non-regular emotion (crying in the middle of a song when you forget the words, telling the church off (particularly when its over tithes and offering), doing the Olympic shout around the church (first one that hits the wall gets a white hanky tied around their neck!) Trick of the Enemy: Used to describe anything that happens because you didn't do what you were supposed to, like your car getting repossessed cause you didn't pay the note, lights getting shut off cause you quit work to go on tour with the pastors choir, or your child repeating the first grade cause he missed the whole second semester to go on a 90 day/90 night fast and consecration. Rhema Word: Any message from an out-of-town pastor or evangelist. Prophetic Word: Same message from that out-of-town pastor, delivered 5 decibels louder, while the congregation is standing. Quiet organ music optional, but works better with silence. Carnal: Used to describe a saint who goes to the movies. This term doesn't apply if you rent the same movie from Blockbuster. Didn't God Move?: What saints say after a long service where the pastor doesn't preach and they just shout the whole service. Unlock Your Blessing: What preachers say after they've finished preaching, and they say you must give $50 to "unlock your blessing." For a more dramatic effect, this offering can be started at $1,000 and worked down to $25. He'll Do It If You Let Him (followed by inaudible tongues): Round one of shouting; will begin in 5 minutes . Organist get ready. We Got To Move On: What the preacher says when he wants shout time to start up again. Organist, turn up the volume on the Leslie. We Have Time for One More Testimony: Not really, we're just waiting on the pastor to come into service. If you're called on during this one, when you hear clapping, just stop talking, cause the pastor has walked in and people are no longer interested in what God did for you. We Can Never Pay for the Word: Get your checkbook out, the auction will begin momentarily! This phrase always comes before the offering is taken for the guest speaker. God Has Been Dealing with Me on Some Issues: I'm still doing what I was doing before I got saved, only now I just put in an extra $5 in my offering when I do it. Is He Worthy?: Of course He is; why ask a question like that. Let Us Go To God in Our Own Way: This is what you say when they ask you to pray in church and you don't know what to say. Get Ready, Get Ready, Get Ready!!!: Don't really know what this one means, but if you're not careful, a shout could break out when you say it. It must be said three times to have real impact. I Can't Get No Help: Preachers say this when no one says amen in the spot they thought would get a lot of amens. I'm Blessed and Highly Favored: Said when a fellow saint asks "how are you?" Memo to saints: you CAN be saved and answer "fine" when someone asks how are you. Where The Spirit of The Lord is, There is liberty: Whenever you want to disrupt service and holler out when it's quiet, use this statement to justify your behavior. Get Ready To Go To The Next Level: This means the church will be hosting another revival in a few months. Stand To Your Feet : This gives the illusion that the preacher is finished, but be prepared to stand up for at least 1/2 hour. May be cut to 15 minutes if the organist starts playing softly. Give God a Shabach: Scream to the top of your lungs. Some church members may blow whistles and wave flags as well. Every Head Bowed, Every Eye Closed: Quick! Everyone look around to see who's getting saved again this week. Secular: Any person, place, object or event that's not in the church. The "Yes Lord" Song: Signals the official end to shout time. Anyone still shouting when this song is over is considered to be "in self". In Self: Used to describe someone who acts alone in church. For example, someone who is shouting alone. Add two more people to this display and its called... In The Spirit: When three people are doing the same thing in a church service at the same time. Prayer Partner: Phone buddy. 5 minutes of prayer, 1 hour of church gossiping

Presenting Dr. Grace LaJoy HendersonAuthor, Publisher, Speaker, Educator, Motivator, Songwriter, Poet
Poetry is just one part of the many gifts and talents of Dr. Grace LaJoy Henderson. She also writes songs, stage plays, and books. In January of 2004, she released her first book of poetry and writings entitled, More Than Mere Words: Poetry That Ministers!
In September of 2005 Grace LaJoy completed her second book entitled, Writers Breakthrough: Steps To Copyright and Publish Your Own Book. Through this book, Grace LaJoy educates writers who know nothing about copyrighting and publishing their own book. She has taught the material from this book as a 16-week course at a local Bible College. Because of her desire to see other gifted writers encouraged and educated to utilize their talent, Grace LaJoy conducts an Annual Writer’s Breakthrough Workshop.
“Building stable family values is the key to curing society’s ills,” says Darren Washington, a 1992 graduate who is director of external affairs for SBC in northwest Indiana.
Washington “talks the talk” as a sought-after public speaker on topics such as character building, self-improvement, substance abuse and abstinence. He “walks the walk” by putting his life on display as a single, black male who chooses abstinence, has a prominent job and is president of the school board in his hometown of Gary, Ind.
Although Washington earned a political science degree from Millikin and holds a master’s degree in public affairs from Indiana University Northwest, he believes family values should not be a political issue. “I have to practice what I preach in order to be believed by the people I’m trying to reach,” says Washington, who founded Abstinence for Singles and speaks to youth and adults about healthy, safe life choices and respecting themselves and others. “I have to use my life to show young people, especially young men, that they need to focus on education and not sex.”
Washington says his ideas and goals for his life were formed in college, and he credits his Millikin years for giving him a career focus. “I didn’t take education seriously at first,” he says, explaining that his priorities were playing basketball and having fun. “I ended up on academic probation, so I changed my focus to getting an education and being involved on campus.”
Campus activities gave Washington his first taste of organized democracy, and he knew it was a good fit. After graduating, Washington interned at the United Way of Central Indiana, where he developed the first youth leadership program and served as an Indiana State Senate intern. Next, he served as the executive director of the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males, working with state and local elected officials to create city and county commissions before moving to corporate America as an area mall manager in Lafayette, Ind., and Toledo, Ohio, with the Simon Property Group.
In 2001, he joined SBC and returned to his hometown, hoping to make a difference in this economically depressed area. As part of his commitment to the Gary school system, Washington spends Friday mornings reading to kindergarten and first grade students at a nearby elementary school. “It is a great joy for me,” he says. “I was used to working with junior high and high school students, but now I realize even more how important it is to start teaching children good morals and the value of an education at a young age.” As board president, he also holds office hours, speaking with parents, teachers and others to share ideas for improving the school district, where more than 60 percent of the students come from low-income families.
Washington, who is also a certified HIV/AIDS counselor, hopes to someday get married and have a family, but realizes his focus will need to change when that happens. “I’ll still promote my lifestyle messages, but I hope to train other young people to give the presentations,” he says. For now, Washington is busy promoting his first book on abstinence and looking at options for becoming more politically active.
“God has blessed me and I believe we are all on this Earth to help future generations avoid the same potholes.”

Kelly ChapmanWhen Kelly Chapman pours out her soul in song, it is an unforgettable, sometimes life-altering experience. Her voice, often described as the sound quality of a “bell” stirs emotions. Each powerful performance has been called “amazing,” “healing,” “awesome,” and “blessed.”
A multi-talented, singer/songwriter/speaker/author and entrepreneur, Kelly has performed background vocals for rhythm and blues artist Tony Terry, rapper MC Chill and gospel artist Charles Woolfork and Covenant.
Kelly’s debut CD Real released to a packed house at Cleveland’s Ohio Theater in Playhouse Square. Having written eight of the 12 songs on the CD, she brings a unique singing and songwriting style to the increasingly crowded talent pool of Christian artists. The phenomenal song “Heal Me” was a finalist in the 2004 Gospel Music Association’s Songwriting Competition and the International Songwriting Competition. A corresponding video was released worldwide on most major television networks including Black Entertainment Television’s (BET) Video Gospel, Christian Television Network and Gospel Music Television. Also, BET chose “Heal Me” for its television promotions for the Hurricane Katrina Relief Telethon.
“Shake the Devil Off” is an upbeat “house” style song that is a personal testimony about relationships gone wrong and finding true love with Jesus. Her jazz influenced song, “Get Into the Flow” featuring Eddie Baccus Jr. from Pieces of a Dream, is full of quiet energy and soulful depth. Kelly opened the BET Celebration of Gospel 2004 pre-show with “Let Your Anointing Fill this Place,” a beautiful worship song inviting God’s presence into the Orpheum Theater. Brides worldwide request “We Give Our Lives to You First,” labeled “the ultimate unity candle song.” “Just One Candle,” sung with daughter Natalie, has anthem-like quality and will fulfill the prophecy of Mark 16:15 to, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”
Driven by the desire to make an impact, Kelly educates and motivates others through philanthropy and artistic talents. “I have a responsibility to women. God allowed me to go through my trials so that I could comfort and encourage others, and to help them avoid the same pitfalls.” She founded the Wilma A. Chapman Fund Scholarship for individuals with mental illness. Named after her mother, Kelly remembers how she successfully raised three children while challenged with the disease.
Kelly’s newest project, Real: The Truth about Being Single with Kelly Chapman is the story behind the music. She is raw and transparent telling of the physical and emotional abuse endured while searching for love. Kelly candidly shares the tumultuous journey that inspired the passion-filled songs from her CD.
Packed with scripture, insight and raw emotion, Real: The Truth about Being Single with Kelly Chapman is a must-read for anyone single and looking for emotional fulfillment – without faith.
Women, men and children worldwide are drawn to Kelly’s unique vocal ability, attention-grabbing writing style and powerfully authentic speeches. She is thoughtful and engaging, leaving those she has touched with the desire to experience more. Kelly wrote the book so that others can find healing from her testimony and know that they do not have to endure abuse in any form.

Dr. Faith Fredrick is the co-founder and president of Faith Christian University in Orlando, Florida. This story is one of great restoration and truly "what the devil meant for evil God turned around for good!As a very young woman, she met and married an evangelist and for many years they traveled throughout the United States ministering in evangelism through music and preaching. After several years of marriage, God blessed Faith with three very talented daughters and as soon as one could carry a tune they were incorporated into their ministry. As a family they shared the joy of ministering in music, recording several musical albums and made numerous appearances on PTL and Pat Robertson's CBN. Following 28 years of marriage and fruitful ministry, this family was disrupted by a dramatic turn of unexpected choices that soon led to divorce. Through the trauma of divorce this mother soon recognized that the destruction of this family unit, as it had been known, wasn’t the only thing at stake but the destiny and eternal purpose of these daughters was the larger target. Faced with that challenge and a mandate of the Holy Spirit she purposed with great determination to turn around the devastation of heartbreak and divorce to victory! After years of evangelism and pastoral ministry she recognized that she must have answers and have them through the Word of God. In 1990 she enrolled at Rhema Bible Training Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and began to experience the revelation of God's Word.
