Black church folk dictionary... Current mood: amused Category: Religion and Philosophy Anointing: Used to describe any non-regular emotion (crying in the middle of a song when you forget the words, telling the church off (particularly when its over tithes and offering), doing the Olympic shout around the church (first one that hits the wall gets a white hanky tied around their neck!) Trick of the Enemy: Used to describe anything that happens because you didn't do what you were supposed to, like your car getting repossessed cause you didn't pay the note, lights getting shut off cause you quit work to go on tour with the pastors choir, or your child repeating the first grade cause he missed the whole second semester to go on a 90 day/90 night fast and consecration. Rhema Word: Any message from an out-of-town pastor or evangelist. Prophetic Word: Same message from that out-of-town pastor, delivered 5 decibels louder, while the congregation is standing. Quiet organ music optional, but works better with silence. Carnal: Used to describe a saint who goes to the movies. This term doesn't apply if you rent the same movie from Blockbuster. Didn't God Move?: What saints say after a long service where the pastor doesn't preach and they just shout the whole service. Unlock Your Blessing: What preachers say after they've finished preaching, and they say you must give $50 to "unlock your blessing." For a more dramatic effect, this offering can be started at $1,000 and worked down to $25. He'll Do It If You Let Him (followed by inaudible tongues): Round one of shouting; will begin in 5 minutes . Organist get ready. We Got To Move On: What the preacher says when he wants shout time to start up again. Organist, turn up the volume on the Leslie. We Have Time for One More Testimony: Not really, we're just waiting on the pastor to come into service. If you're called on during this one, when you hear clapping, just stop talking, cause the pastor has walked in and people are no longer interested in what God did for you. We Can Never Pay for the Word: Get your checkbook out, the auction will begin momentarily! This phrase always comes before the offering is taken for the guest speaker. God Has Been Dealing with Me on Some Issues: I'm still doing what I was doing before I got saved, only now I just put in an extra $5 in my offering when I do it. Is He Worthy?: Of course He is; why ask a question like that. Let Us Go To God in Our Own Way: This is what you say when they ask you to pray in church and you don't know what to say. Get Ready, Get Ready, Get Ready!!!: Don't really know what this one means, but if you're not careful, a shout could break out when you say it. It must be said three times to have real impact. I Can't Get No Help: Preachers say this when no one says amen in the spot they thought would get a lot of amens. I'm Blessed and Highly Favored: Said when a fellow saint asks "how are you?" Memo to saints: you CAN be saved and answer "fine" when someone asks how are you. Where The Spirit of The Lord is, There is liberty: Whenever you want to disrupt service and holler out when it's quiet, use this statement to justify your behavior. Get Ready To Go To The Next Level: This means the church will be hosting another revival in a few months. Stand To Your Feet : This gives the illusion that the preacher is finished, but be prepared to stand up for at least 1/2 hour. May be cut to 15 minutes if the organist starts playing softly. Give God a Shabach: Scream to the top of your lungs. Some church members may blow whistles and wave flags as well. Every Head Bowed, Every Eye Closed: Quick! Everyone look around to see who's getting saved again this week. Secular: Any person, place, object or event that's not in the church. The "Yes Lord" Song: Signals the official end to shout time. Anyone still shouting when this song is over is considered to be "in self". In Self: Used to describe someone who acts alone in church. For example, someone who is shouting alone. Add two more people to this display and its called... In The Spirit: When three people are doing the same thing in a church service at the same time. Prayer Partner: Phone buddy. 5 minutes of prayer, 1 hour of church gossiping

This is how we do it: Worship - Beyond the Veil. Just bring it

Israel Houghton, Cece, Martha Munizzi or Hezekiah Walker. Praise and Worship, Gospel Music - who is your favorite? Hear two worship leaders tonight discuss the purpose of praise and how worship ushers in the anointing for miracles. Leah Hubbard of Great Faith Ministries (Detroit) and Angelique Black McKoy, author of Beyond the Veil: A Handbook for the Worship Journey.

  • Date / Time:

Beyond the Veil: A Handbook for the Worship Journey

This handbook is for all Worship Leaders and worshippers in general who want to experience God in a different way. The time has come to leave "church as usual" behind and this same idea filters into the genre of Praise and Worship. It is time to meet God in a new place.beyond the veil -that realm between the ripped veil and the glory of His presence. We often let the worship experience take us into the Tabernacle, but we get lost somewhere between the inner court and the Holy of Holies. God is waiting for us to go beyond the dominion of casual worship and enter into the place that enlightens and allows us to receive change. When we change our perception - everything around us will change. Change how you look at things and the things around you will indeed appear different. This all happens in worship. The text holds secrets that have been developed by worshipers from every walk of life. It is full of lessons that we complete every day throughout our Christian walk. See them as "impractical" guidelines because this book is not about the typical ways to enter into worship. You won't find the "how to's" and the "when to's" here. But what you will find are methods that have been tested, tried and proven to cause a memorable and personal encounter with the Lord each time you attempt to meet Him. This handbook outlines common tools that are sometimes overlooked, but when used effectively, can and will enhance one's walk with God.

If you'd like additional reading on the topic of dating and relationships, we recommend the following books:

A Knight in Shining Armor by P. B. Wilson
      Inside Out by Larry Crabb
The Power of Vision by Myles Munroe
Free at Last by Dr. Tony Evans
Men and women all over this country are discussing the finer points of this book.
Here are some discussion starters for your small group or if you are in a dating relationship:
      The Journey Begins: Chapter 1

      1. How do I know I'm not justifying "my decision with God's leading?" How do I know it is or is not God?

      2. I understand it's important to "know myself, (and) know who I am becoming" but how do I do that? Where do I begin?

      3. How can we recognize the difference between God’s leading and our own overwhelming desire for something?

      4. It is critically important for men and women to be aware of who they are and who they are becoming. How does that process of awareness being? How can a man or woman assess their level of self-awareness? Who should they turn to for guidance in this process?

[Back to Study and Discussion Questions]
The Man You Are Becoming: Chapter 2

      1. How do I know I'm not justifying "my decision with God's leading?" How do I know it is or is not God?

      2. I understand it's important to "know myself (and) know who I am becoming" but how do I do that? Where do I begin?

[Back to Study and Discussion Questions]
The Woman You Are Becoming: Chapter 3

      1. How do I know I'm not justifying "my decision with God's leading?" How do I know it is or is not God?

      2. I understand it's important to "know myself, (and) know who I am becoming" but how do I do that? Where do I begin?

[Back to Study and Discussion Questions]
      Who's Your Comforter?: Chapter 4

      1. Is it bad for someone to surround themselves with people who make the individual feel secure and comforted at all times?

      2. Is God really enough in all aspects of life? What situations arise in life that continually cause you to stumble? In these situations, who or what do you turn to for comfort?

      3. What are healthy ways to deal with loneliness, frustration, insecurity, confusion and anger?

      4. What are productive ways to approach stress and boredom?

      5. Is there anything wrong with wanting to be in a love relationship? How does a man or woman find contentment and purpose in their singlehood? How do we stop viewing singlehood as a never-ending season in our lives?

      6. Are people called to be single? Why or why not?

      7. What does a life characterized by contentment look like?

      8. Can someone be content with their life and still be ambitious? Is ambition a negative attribute?

      9. How do we recognize God’s timing and perfect will?

      10. Is disappointment over circumstances a sign of discontentment? Why or why not?

[Back to Study and Discussion Questions]
      Experiencing Healthy Relationships: Chapter 5

      1. How does one learn to have meaningful long-term relationships?

      2. How does one deal with trust issues that hinder them from meaningful relationships?

      3. What do someone’s same sex friendships reveal about how they will function in relationships with the opposite sex?

      4. What is the best way for a man or a woman to “observe” or “evaluate?” How does a man or a woman avoid being distracted by the things that attract them to the individual?

      5. Why is accountability important in same sex relationships? How is accountability established and maintained? Is it unhealthy for male and female friends to be accountable to each other? Why or why not?

      6. What does it look like to be consumed by God?

[Back to Study and Discussion Questions]
      Got F.A.I.T.H.: Chapter 6

      1. What to Do...When a man or woman makes a decision to “hold out” for the one God has chosen for them, he/she at times can feel as if good options are always passing them by. While a man or woman doesn’t want to lower their standards, a fear settles in that they may ultimately be alone. How does someone know if their standards are too high? How does someone know if they are settling?

      2. What are some “tell-tale signs” a person is a phony rather than the real deal?

      3. How important is it that both partners are virgins? What if neither are or only one is?

      4. How is the dating relationship/courtship altered for single parents? When and how do you introduce/involve the child in the relationship?

      5. At what point does the relationship become an exclusive committed relationship?

      6. At what point does an emotional investment in a relationship shift to engaging the heart? How do you guard against such a shift?

      7. Is there a set timeline for a courting relationship? If yes, how and by whom is it set? If no, how should the couple go about determining what is best for there relationship?

      8. How does a couple identify the “ideal mentor couple?” How does this relationship work and how long does it last?

9.Is it wrong to have a list of expectations for a potential mate? Why or why not?

[Back to Study and Discussion Questions]
Our Story, "He Said...She Said": Chapter 7

      1. The book suggests that men and women should be self-aware. How can a person who lacks self-awareness develop in that area?

      2. Is teachability synonymous with obedience? How are the two alike? How are the two different?

      3. Is it appropriate for a woman to observe a man before the man has stated that he wants to pursue her?

      4. In pursuing Jada, Conway made it a priority to find out more about her by talking to people who disliked her. Why is this beneficial? How should this information be received considering an individual may have changed drastically since interacting with the people who dislike her?

      5. If a man has begun actively pursuing a woman and has a list of questions for her, when and how should he pose these questions to her? Should the questions come all at once or over a period of time? Is the woman expected to answer all questions immediately or can she answer them at a later date? When should questions of intimacy be posed and answered?

      6. What is meant in the book by “check-in points” during his/her observation? Why is this essential to do?

      7. If a woman is being observed for a future relationship, how is she then also viewed as a sister in Christ? How does a man’s interaction with a woman change when he begins pursuing her? Should it change? Why or why not?

      8. At what point during the courtship should the man meet the woman’s family? And the woman his family?

      9. What discussions, decisions and plans should a couple start making together as they prepare for marriage (i.e. choosing a home, joint finances, family planning, etc.)?

[Back to Study and Discussion Questions]
      Take the Lead: Chapter 8

      1. What does it look like for a man to lead with humility yet provide “certainty and security” in expressing his vision?

      2. What does it mean for a man to provide a woman with security in the worldly sense? What does it mean in the biblical sense? Do the two ever overlap?

      3. As a woman enters into a relationship with a man, should she be expected to give up certain things (i.e. professional goals, dreams, ministry work, independence, etc.)?

      4. What does sound, effective leadership look like?

[Back to Study and Discussion Questions]
      Frequently Asked Questions: Chapter 9

      1. Is it possible that being nice can be mistaken for flirting? What are some of the differences between the two? How can the habit of flirting be broken?

      2. Is it ever appropriate for a woman to share intimate/personal information about herself with her closest male friends? Why or why not?

      3. “Just because a man goes to church doesn’t mean he is living by the Word of God.” What type of behavior(s) should a man living by the Word exhibit? What are some indicators that a man is being authentic rather than “performing?”

      4. If a woman has developed a distorted view of men based on past experiences, what can she do to correct that view, other than seek counseling?

      5. What to Do...A woman meets a man that is a Christian – goes to church, active in ministry, reads the Word – but he still has habits of the world such as drinking and cursing (neither in abundance). Are these habits absolute “deal breakers” in pursuing a relationship or just flaws? Should this woman walk with him through these issues? Why or why not?

      6. What are some examples of information that is and is not appropriate to share with your spiritual father?

      7. How do you know if your covering as acting accordingly?

      8. How involved should spiritual fathers be in the lives of their spiritual sons and/or daughters? Should spiritual fathers be involved in all areas of their lives or focus primarily on the relationships they are involved in?

      9. Should a woman’s spiritual covering be married? Why or why not? What does the relationship look like between the wife and the covered woman?

      10. How should a woman respond if she is approached by two men?

      11. How does a woman recognize the man God has called to be her husband?

    My Supreme Dreams Confessions

    By Dr. Stacia Pierce (www.Ministry4Women.com)

I am an over the top dreamer! I go and see new things on the next level and imagine myself accomplishing big things in my life and living a grand lifestyle.

I frame my future with the words of my mouth and keep faith photos of my dreams before me.

I use my faith to believe for the impossible because with God all things are possible.

I believe the good things I have imagined will come to pass in my life for the Word say, “No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11).

I am a woman of faith and patience and know that a dream delayed is not a dream denied.

I am confident that I will achieve all my dreams and take advantage of opportunities that bring me closer to fulfilling them.

I am not anxious or frustrated but wait patiently for my due season and thank God for the manifestations.

I am full of faith and take calculated risk. My life is full of excitement and big adventures.

I am extremely blessed and live a first-class life. Doors of opportunity are opened everyday for me to live out my dreams. God has prepared great things for me and his favor goes before me.

I am a visionary and dream achiever. God will do exceeding abundantly above all I can ask or think.   In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In April 2008, Stacy's first novella, My Mother's Shadow, will be featured in This Far By Faith, an anthology containing three tales about mother and daughter relationships. The anthology (published by Harlequin/Kimani Press) will also feature the short novels of bestselling authors Linda Hudson-Smith and Kendra Norman-Bellamy.

She continues to pen inspirational works and is also writing a series of children’s early reader chapter books targeted towards girls, ages 7-9.
