Black church folk dictionary... Current mood: amused Category: Religion and Philosophy Anointing: Used to describe any non-regular emotion (crying in the middle of a song when you forget the words, telling the church off (particularly when its over tithes and offering), doing the Olympic shout around the church (first one that hits the wall gets a white hanky tied around their neck!) Trick of the Enemy: Used to describe anything that happens because you didn't do what you were supposed to, like your car getting repossessed cause you didn't pay the note, lights getting shut off cause you quit work to go on tour with the pastors choir, or your child repeating the first grade cause he missed the whole second semester to go on a 90 day/90 night fast and consecration. Rhema Word: Any message from an out-of-town pastor or evangelist. Prophetic Word: Same message from that out-of-town pastor, delivered 5 decibels louder, while the congregation is standing. Quiet organ music optional, but works better with silence. Carnal: Used to describe a saint who goes to the movies. This term doesn't apply if you rent the same movie from Blockbuster. Didn't God Move?: What saints say after a long service where the pastor doesn't preach and they just shout the whole service. Unlock Your Blessing: What preachers say after they've finished preaching, and they say you must give $50 to "unlock your blessing." For a more dramatic effect, this offering can be started at $1,000 and worked down to $25. He'll Do It If You Let Him (followed by inaudible tongues): Round one of shouting; will begin in 5 minutes . Organist get ready. We Got To Move On: What the preacher says when he wants shout time to start up again. Organist, turn up the volume on the Leslie. We Have Time for One More Testimony: Not really, we're just waiting on the pastor to come into service. If you're called on during this one, when you hear clapping, just stop talking, cause the pastor has walked in and people are no longer interested in what God did for you. We Can Never Pay for the Word: Get your checkbook out, the auction will begin momentarily! This phrase always comes before the offering is taken for the guest speaker. God Has Been Dealing with Me on Some Issues: I'm still doing what I was doing before I got saved, only now I just put in an extra $5 in my offering when I do it. Is He Worthy?: Of course He is; why ask a question like that. Let Us Go To God in Our Own Way: This is what you say when they ask you to pray in church and you don't know what to say. Get Ready, Get Ready, Get Ready!!!: Don't really know what this one means, but if you're not careful, a shout could break out when you say it. It must be said three times to have real impact. I Can't Get No Help: Preachers say this when no one says amen in the spot they thought would get a lot of amens. I'm Blessed and Highly Favored: Said when a fellow saint asks "how are you?" Memo to saints: you CAN be saved and answer "fine" when someone asks how are you. Where The Spirit of The Lord is, There is liberty: Whenever you want to disrupt service and holler out when it's quiet, use this statement to justify your behavior. Get Ready To Go To The Next Level: This means the church will be hosting another revival in a few months. Stand To Your Feet : This gives the illusion that the preacher is finished, but be prepared to stand up for at least 1/2 hour. May be cut to 15 minutes if the organist starts playing softly. Give God a Shabach: Scream to the top of your lungs. Some church members may blow whistles and wave flags as well. Every Head Bowed, Every Eye Closed: Quick! Everyone look around to see who's getting saved again this week. Secular: Any person, place, object or event that's not in the church. The "Yes Lord" Song: Signals the official end to shout time. Anyone still shouting when this song is over is considered to be "in self". In Self: Used to describe someone who acts alone in church. For example, someone who is shouting alone. Add two more people to this display and its called... In The Spirit: When three people are doing the same thing in a church service at the same time. Prayer Partner: Phone buddy. 5 minutes of prayer, 1 hour of church gossiping

Helps Black Teen Boys Thrive, Not Just Survive!16.4% of black teens have carried a weapon
Among 10 to 24 year-olds, homicide is the leading cause of death of blacks
Only 8% of young black men have graduated from college
Young black men represent more than 40% of the prison population
Finally, a new book that will help teens overcome the statistics, transforming them from young boys to men of integrity. Rev. Dr. James C. Perkins, founder of the Benjamin E. Mays Male Academy, has responded to the national crisis affecting black teen boys. In Playbookfor Christian Manhood: 12 Key Plays for Black Teen Boys, Dr. Perkins has compiled a game plan for black males aged 11-15 that supplies twelve essential lessons for godly character. With Rev. Perkins’ help, these young men will learn to:
1. Establish their own identity 2. Identify their purpose 3. Value education 4. Protect their body 5. Honor parents and respect girls 6. Acknowledge authority 7. Develop leadership skills 8. Safeguard their sexuality 9. Deal with disappointment 1o. Manage money
This playbook offers basic formation, blocking and pass strategies, and a view of the goal line!
Why This Book Works!
1. Easy for boys aged 11-15 to read and understand 2. Uses football terminology boys will embrace 3. Encourages boys to jot down thoughts, examples, and action plans in their own personal playbook 4. Invites teens to use their own life experiences to navigate problems 5. Same successful techniques used at the Benjamin E. Mays Male AcademyAbout the Author:

Meet Author Terrence Wilson
Terrence (age 29) is a South Carolina native who now resides in Southeast Michigan. The younger of two children, Terrence’s childhood was that of a humble beginning. Growing up in a house in which his father was absent, Terrence experienced firsthand the anguish of being raised in a single-parent home. Even though his father was not there, he did not allow that to be his excuse for failure.
While growing up, Terrence was very active in both school and church. While in college, he was the State President for the Youth & College Division of the South Carolina Branches of the NAACP, amongst other positions. He was frequently called upon as an inspirational speaker for youth. For his activism, he was recognized by the state of South Carolina as one of the Top Ten Minorities to Watch Under the age of 30 in 1998.
In 2002, Terrence began ministering in boy’s homes and other youth groups. His message was that “despite your current circumstances, with God on your side you can make it.” He has started an organization, called Wilstonian, which will help to create resources to deal with such issues. The first of such resources will be a book entitled In Search of a Father, in which he outlines his internal struggles while growing up due to the fact that his father was not there.
Today, Terrence is happily married to his wife, Karen. Terrence and Karen are members of Word of Faith International Christian Center - Southfield, MI, where Bishop Keith A. Butler is their pastor.

We Are All Witnesses
It goes without saying that Resurrection Day is the most important day of the year for Christians. Without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is no salvation, without salvation there is no Christianity.
As the Bible teaches in Romans 10:9, 10, an individual must not only confess Jesus as Lord, but they also must believe that God has raised him from the dead to be saved. This illustrates that the heart of the gospel message is that Jesus rose from the dead.
In the Book of Acts one word seemed to be used repeatedly to describe the followers of Jesus, witnesses. The 11 Apostles immediately set out to pick one of those that had been with them from the beginning of Jesus' ministry, who had heard what he said, saw what he did, and knew what they knew, to be a replacement for Judas.
In Peter's first message on the day of Pentecost, his grand finale was that Jesus was no longer dead but alive and that they were all witnesses.
He followed that up with witnessing to the Sanhedrin council that Jesus, who they had crucified, was risen from the dead. The rest of the apostles joined in with Peter in testifying of what they had heard, seen, and knew, that Jesus was alive. They with more than 500 others had personally seen Jesus after his resurrection. He was among them for 40 days and proved he was alive by many infallible proofs.
Therefore, they went from being a depressed group of men who were locked up in a room for fear of the Jews to an ecstatic group that found themselves on the streets of Jerusalem testifying about the resurrection of Jesus.
However, they all testified through their actions that their testimony was true. They along with those that became followers of Jesus through his ministry and theirs testified wherever they went that Jesus was alive.
Later a man named Paul, the Osama Bin Laden of his day, one who had Christians killed for his beliefs had an encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. He left on his trip with plans to end the lives of Christians, he returned as a witness to the resurrection of Jesus.
As Christians today, we have the same responsibility to spread the good news about the resurrection of Jesus as those that have come before us.
We are witnesses, commissioned to testify that Jesus is not dead but alive, and that his resurrection is proof that everything he said was true. He is the Messiah, the Savior of the world, and that if one were to believe in him they could avoid a devil's hell and have eternal life.
We may not have seen Jesus with our own eyes as the early believers did but we can present some of the same evidence that they did. We have the Bible's testimony, which is easily proven to be divine. The accuracy of Bible prophecy alone proves its source.
The many healings and miracles occurring not only in churches and conventions all over the world, but in grocery stores, athletic fields, in schools, and anywhere else you find Bible believing Christians using the authority of Jesus also prove that Jesus is alive and still working miracles as he did in his time on the earth.
As he said, whatever we ask in his name, he will do it, that we will do the works he did. Sure, some may believe that every miracle is fake, however there are far too many people who will gladly testify of what Jesus did for them to totally ignore.
Lastly, as Christians, each of us is a witness of what Jesus has done in our marriages, bodies, finances, careers, emotions, and other areas of our lives. We must not be ashamed to get in the streets as the early believers did and to testify about what Jesus has done for us.
Resurrection Day is not just a day where we celebrate but a day when we are reminded of our responsibility to be a witness to our world that Jesus is alive and that what he did for us he will do for them as well.

Dr. Keira holds a Masters of Biblical Studies (MBS) and an earned Doctor of Ministry degree (D. Min.) from Friends International Christian University, of Merced, California.
A Word from Dr. Keira Banks.
Christian women are doing incredible things around the globe. On every continent Spirit-empowered women are advancing the Kingdom of God in amazing and mind-bending ways. As homemakers, executives, intercessors, ministers and faithful employee’s women are arising as a powerful prophetic force of reckoning. In The Book of Judges chapters Four and Five we find the accounts of two God appointed women, Deborah and Jael. They were both daughters of the Most High God, but possessed distinctly different anointing and assignments. Nevertheless, both Deborah and Jael are called with the same fierce empowerment to work together to exploit darkness and oppression wherever it is found. The marvelous truth is that both Deborah and Jael were called to destroy Sisera, the enemy of Israel. Sisera is representative of oppression and defeat. Both Deborah and Jael are each given a unique and strategic role in bringing down their enemy. However, it is vitally important to understand that neither woman could accomplish the enemy’s defeat on their own. They needed one another. We discover in the text that what Deborah starts, Jael finishes, and what Deborah declares prophetically, Jael is able to manifest. It is important to note that the two women were not in competition against one another since Deborah did not bring to the table what Jael could and vice versa. The texts in The Book of Judges help us to understand that when women work in partnership one with another, we become unstoppable in the realm of the spirit.
In 2002, I founded the Lily Housing Corporation (LHC), a non-profit charity established to provide temporary housing for women and their children in transition. Currently, we have one property in Newport News, Virginia while plans are underway to expand Lily Housing to a number of cities in the state of Virginia. We are also very pleased to announce that Lily Housing has expanded internationally with the purchase of property in the city of Chennai, India where we will build a 4,000 square foot orphanage to assist children in transition and in need of the love of God.
Women of God, all around the globe, I cannot do this vision alone. I need your help. I need your Spirit-empowered prayers as well as your vital financial support. God gave me a piece of this assignment to minister in practical ways to women in transition and to orphans internationally. You have the remaining piece of the assignment in your hand and heart. I need helping hands that are willing to liberally give on a consistent basis and I need willing hearts with a capacity for the nations - hearts that will connect with a vision greater than themselves. We are grateful for your prayers, encouragement, and continued support. Together we will impact the world!
In His Service,
Rev. Dr. Cecelia E. Greene Barr personally received God's plan of salvation more than 29 years ago through the confession of her sins and expressed belief that Jesus is the Son of God. She is a spirit filled citizen in the Kingdom of God who embraces the manifested gifts of the Holy Spirit. She has served as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ since preaching her initial sermon on June 13th 1993.
Her methodology and philosophy of ministry was molded by the effective tutelage of the late Rev. Dr. Samuel D. Proctor. Raised in the Baptist church, she is an Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church - presently serving in the Fourth District - Michigan Annual Conference as the pastor of Trinity A. M. E. Church in Detroit. Prior to her appointment as the pastor of Trinity, she served as the Chief of Staff at St. Stephen A. M. E. Church in Chicago, IL where Rev. Albert D. Tyson, III is the pastor. During her tenure in ministry she has affected the body of Christ through the gifts of preaching, administration, diligence, and biblical instruction for Christian maturity.
Ministry beyond the congregation is realized as a member of the Michigan Annual Conference Board of Examiners, for which she serves as the Chair of First Year Studies. Dr. GreeneBarr works with other clergy through her involvement in the A. M. E. Ministerial Alliance of Southeastern Michigan, where she has served as the Secretary and Assistant Secretary. Ecumenical involvement is actively achieved through such venues as the Pastors of Excellence Program that is administered by the Sandberg Leadership Center and funded by the Lily Foundation. Dr. GreeneBarr has been published in Guide My Feet: Ministry Transformed through Mentoring, This is My Story: Testimonies and Sermons of Black Women in Ministry, The African American Pulpit (Summer 2005), and When Pastors Pray: The Prayers and Psalms of Pastors.
Involved in the community, she has served as a volunteer for Big Sisters of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Rev. Dr. GreeneBarr is also a life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. a public service organization dedicated to Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. She served four years as the Midwest Regional Chaplain. During her tenure as Chaplain she conducted workshops during Regional Conferences that were created specifically for chapter chaplains; she often preached the gospel message at Delta prayer breakfasts and Founder's Days as well as convened Regional Revivals.
In 1999, Rev. Dr. GreeneBarr contributed to the Kingdom of God through the founding of Sharing Faith Ministries, Inc. a Kingdom based ministry that promotes spiritual maturity. To this end, she conducts religious and educational services, activities and projects to spiritually assess and develop central personality competencies of motives, traits and self-identity consistent with the biblical mandate to take on the mind of Christ.
Rev. Dr. GreeneBarr submits to the work of ministry as a prepared servant.
