MAP for Nonprofits executive director Judy Alnes tells about the firm's extraordinary experience leading 80-plus Twin Cities nonprofits through a realignment process when services duplication, financial pressures and other needs demanded a change. MAP has developed a well tested "realignment process" used to help nonprofits succeed at merging. Ed Stracke from Camps of Courage and Friendship talks about his organization's own experience of merging with another nonprofit. Sarah also talks with the Amherst Wilder Foundation  researcher Laura Martell Kelly about Wilder Research's analysis of the processes of 41 nonprofit mergers and the merger success factors identified. Their report in conjunction with MAP, Success Factors in Nonprofit Mergers, is a great resource for nonprofits looking at strategies for continued community service in the challenging times nonprofits are facing.   01:08:00Change Pioneers Radionononprofits, merger, finances, success, researchHost Sarah Todd talks with three nonprofit sector leaders about when nonprofits should consider a merger as a strategic option for continued community service,One Earth Designs Aims to Save a Billion Lives http://www.blogtalkradio.com/changepioneers/2013/07/18/how-can-a-solar-powered-cooker-save-millions-of-livesCurrent Eventshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/changepioneers/2013/07/18/how-can-a-solar-powered-cooker-save-millions-of-lives/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/changepioneers/2013/07/18/how-can-a-solar-powered-cooker-save-millions-of-livesThu, 18 Jul 2013 15:00:00 GMTOne Earth Designs Aims to Save a Billion Lives One Earth Designs CEO Scot Frank tells host Sarah Todd the story of his decision to develop a solar powered cooker to help save a potential billion lives in China, India and Southeast Asia. Rural villagers in these areas have no access to electricity and many are dying of pollution from the solid fuels they must use. One Earth's SolSource solar cooker weighs about 20kg and can boil a quart of water in 10 minutes. Costs for rural villagers the company targets will be largely supplemented by government and other organizations. While it started as a nonprofit, One Earth leaders Scot Frank and Catlin Powers quickly realized that to reach the huge areas they were targeting, a for-profit model was needed to sustain outreach. If it meets it goal of $45 million in sales within just a few years, One Earth Designs could save almost a billion lives with its products. Since its founding, One Earth Designs’ work has been recognized by the Dutch Postcode Lottery Green Challenge, St. Andrews Prize for the Environment, MIT $100k Competition, Clinton Global Initiative, Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Yunus Innovation Challenge. Scot also discusses his evolution as a leader of social change enterprises.  His designs have won many prestigious awards for innovation since  he graduated from MIT as an electrical engineer. He holds three patents, has founded three companies, and worked in IBM’s India Research Laboratory, led MIT Development Lab’s China program, administered the MIT Global Village Project, and advised on renewable energy projects for the Clinton Global Initiative and Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room. He has been listed by Forbes as a 30 under 30 entrepreneur.  02:00:00Change Pioneers Radionorural, nonprofits, entrepreneur, solar,ChineseOne Earth Designs CEO Scot Frank tells host Sarah Todd the story of his decision to develop a solar powered cooker to help save a potential billion lives in ChCommunity Radio Empowers Local Change http://www.blogtalkradio.com/changepioneers/2013/05/17/community-radio-empowering-local-changeRadiohttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/changepioneers/2013/05/17/community-radio-empowering-local-change/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/changepioneers/2013/05/17/community-radio-empowering-local-changeFri, 17 May 2013 15:00:00 GMTCommunity Radio Empowers Local Change In this episode of Change Pioneers, host Sarah Todd welcomes Jeff Rousset, National Organizer for U.S. nonprofit Prometheus Radio Project (PRP). They will discuss how PRP helped to get the new Local Community Radio Act passed by the U.S. Congress, and what it will mean for  communities that start these stations. New low frequency stations across the U.S. will be going live over the next 1-2 years. The new stations have the potential to change the face of radio nationwide. Many such stations are also being used in other countries to ensure a "free press" local coverage of community issues and events. We'll talk about the stories of these stations and how to get one up and running. Prometheus provides extensive information and support to U.S. groups wanting to start low frequency radio stations in their community. Private foundations are funding other similar efforts across the globe.
