West Chester Veterinary Care (WCVC) is a full-service veterinary hospital, dog daycare, and pet lodging facility.  Located just off Union Centre Boulevard, WCVC opened in January, 2009.  In addition to the above services, WCVC offers drop-off appointments.  This unique concept in veterinary wellness care was originally designed as a means of comforting anxious pets in order to allow them to habituate to the facility and experience a less stressful veterinary examination.  Through use of this service, we have perceived added benefits beyond what we had originally anticipated.  My special interest in pet behavior problems has lately focused on prevention.  I have noted quite a bit of anxiety among pets visiting their vet.   In an attempt to alleviate that anxiety, drop-off appointments and “happy visits” were created.  Today I want to focus on the drop-off appointment and the benefits to all parties involved.  This is how it works: the dogs and cats are scheduled for drop-off appointments and arrive at the hospital between 7:30 and 9:30 AM.  The owners are asked to complete a physical examination sheet that contains basic health and wellness questions similar to those that would be asked by the staff during a normal office visit.  The owners also review an estimate of the services proposed and authorize as much or as little as desired.  The pet is then transferred to the hospital where he or she is given time to settle in.  If the pet is a dog and it is up to date on vaccinations, it is given free daycare and will be taken to the playroom for exercise and socialization once in the morning and again in the afternoon.  When the schedule allows, we retrieve the pet and perform the physical examination and all requested services.
