Cathy Bennett

I am very pleased to have as my guest, fellow student at Marylhurst University and a woman who has an inspiring story to tell, Jane Meade-Glanville...Currently Jane works in Human Resources in Healthcare, and is a part-time college student at Marylhurst in Communications, plus a single mom of a 13 year old daughter. She was a former business owner of Island Creamery in SE Portland and the Clutterbusters Home Organizing Company also in SE Portland. Along with these business experiences, Jane has been a professional make-up artist, an inside/outside sales rep in multiple industries, and is currently training to be a motivational speaker for building self esteem and empowerment in women, advocating for women's rights as they relate to developing self esteem and a strong inner core of value.

Jane is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and adult abusive relationships. She has direct experience with the results of low to high self esteem issues, gaining and losing 100+ pounds which has helped form strong opinions on self esteem and its origins. She regularly participates in community groups such as Twelve Step for Eating Disorder and Abuse Recovery. In her own words, Jane states:

“My philosophy is you can achieve anything you want to by putting one foot in front of the other, but you must have an idea of what your goal looks like visually and how it fits in with your lifestyle. Even if you feel like you are not good enough—like your tennis shoes are not as white as the next guy’s—if you can look around and see what it is you want and then find  someone who has achieved it, approach them and find out how they did it.”

“I spent years floating around on the idea that I was not good enough, smart enough, fast enough, fashionable enough and so many other "not enoughs" that it would make your head spin if I listed them all here!  What I have learned through personal triumph over a very bad relationship situation, is that no one really has the controls, but you—no one can be in charge of you, but you.  I used to think it was selfish to feel in control, but now I realize that we have to put on our own ‘oxygen mask’ before we can help those around us put theirs on.  I have learned that self esteem is an innate right for us all, not awarded by someone else because you did what they wanted, how they wanted it, or that you have rescued them. Building self esteem is about rescuing you from you.”
