    Here is a listing of wonderful people, products & services that I’ve got to compile for 2009 in regards to eco-friendly living.  Some have been guests on the CasaVerde radio show, some have been written about in other columns & some are products I’ve found, used & wanted to share.  Now, what makes ME qualified to compile such a list?  Well, as a former Director of Ops for a chain of retail stores that specialized in nature, science & healthy living, & in charge of purchasing & compiling preferred vendor lists & custom product development-I’ve been “vetting” vendors, manufacturers & products for many years.  While there may be other manufacturers & vendors that offer similar products, the ones that I’m writing about I have some knowledge of the product, their customer service, ease of using their websites & commitment to their mission statement.  Here goes…

     

     

    Paint & Wallcoverings:

    Sherwin Williams: From no and low VOC paints & stains, to their own line of biodegradable drop cloths, Sherwin Williams continues to lead the way in transforming the paint industry.  www.sherwin-williams.com

    Farrow & Ball:  Another paint manufacturer from the UK that manufacturers low and no VOC paints.  Their color offerings aren’t as wide as Sherwin Williams, and are much more traditional in their offerings (think colors like milk paint offered).  F&B also has created a line of low VOC wallpaper.  Patterns are hand-blocked on paper.  Again, very traditional, but fills the niche nicely.  www.farrow-ball.com

    CasaVerde: How to Dress a Bed w/Krista Sonnier

    Hi All-
    How phenomenal was today's show?  Krista is an incredible, engaging guest, besides being outrageously knowledgable!!  We disccussed the proper layering/dressing of a bed, thread count & an incredible offer from Peacock Alley to all CasaVerde listeners...

    Krista first told us that we need to think of dressing a bed, as dressing ourselves...we need to start w/the proper undergarments or foundations.  In the case of our beds, that would be a mattress pad, a feather bed and/or a wool mattress pad.  This will add "loft" and comfort, along with being incredibly luxurious!

    Next to take into consideration is pillows.  A good, high quality pillow will go a long way in helping you sleep better at night, prevent "crooks" and other assorted pains in your neck & add to the "sleep experience".  There are pillows for those who sleep on their sides, back & stomach.  READ the label, and purchase the pillow that suits how you sleep.  There are also down alternatives available for those who suffer from allergies.  A good pillow protector is also recommended to help extend the life of your pillow, prevent dust mites (ick) & help those who have allergies.

    Peacock Alley has developed an incredible innovation in bedskirts/dust ruffles...a "deck-less" bedskirt.  The PA product is actually 3 panels that are pinned to the box spring.  Same size fits all beds & depths as all you have to do is adjust where you pin the panel!  1 person can now change the dust ruffle w/out straining their back!!  LOVE THIS!!!

    OK, we've got our "foundation" mattress pad and feather bed, our dust ruffle (if needed/wanted...I have one just because my dogs like sleeping under the bed & the dust ruffle adds to the "cave" feeling for them) & our fabulous, sleep-style specific pillows.  Now, the sheets....first off, make sure to measure the depth of your mattress so you get the right size fitted sheet!  You don't want the sheet to ride up when you sleep so you get tangled up!  Put on your fitte sheet, pillow cases on your sleep pillows & then your top sheet.  Top sheet should be placed PRETTY SIDE DOWN!  This is done so that when you fold the sheet back, the hem/stitching can be seen.  Tuck in using hospital corners for a nice tight fit.

    Next up is your blanket.  Pick your weight depending on geographic area and/or season.  Fleece and/or cotton are the most popular choices here.  Next layer is the matalaise blanket.  Matalaise can also be referred to as blanket cover or coverlette.  Think of this as the "little black dress" you have to dress up!  The matalaise is to be placed, and draped over the blanket and meant to hang over the mattress.  There is usually a 15-16" drop, which places it right where the dust ruffle starts. 

    Lastly, the comforter is added.  This can be down, down alternative, fleece...whatever.  The comforter is folded in a "burrito" fold or in 1/3s, and placed at the end of the bed.  Shams, accent & throw pillows are added depending on decor & style, and you have a beautifully dressed bed.  (There is an art to how to place/stack pillows on your bed from traditional to contemporary...see the Peacock Alley website for ideas!).

    ***When buying down or down alternative, make sure to look at the FILL AND the WEIGHT as they are different!!  Fill is the SIZE of the down cluster-so you can have a larger FILL which gives you more LOFT (i.e. poof) but you won't suffocate under the WEIGHT of denser packed fibers!!  READ the LABEL & if you have a question, ASK!***

    Krista & I also had a "controversial moment" in Krista's statement that "Thread count doesn't matter"!  I gasped when I first heard her state this in Chicago a few months back & wanted her to explain.  She stated that first off, thread count is how many threads per square inch.  When there are claims of 5000 thread count...you CAN'T have 5000 threads in a square inch UNLESS you are pulling the thread apart and making 3-10 pieces out of the original 1.  To illustrate, think of a piece of yarn that you can unravel...1 strand of yarn can become many...this is the same concept.  Your 1 strong piece of thread, has now been divided into many pieces thereby lessening the strength & durability of the original fiber.  Again, READ the LABEL.  Krista states that you  must look for QUALITY of yarn (100% Egyptian cotton for example), CONSTRUCTION of the weave, and finally the FINISH (percale, sateen...).  FEEL the fabric...do you like it?  Is it constructed well?  If there are no samples available for you to actually touch, ask someone to open a package for you to test.

    GREEN buzzwords & their meanings so you don’t get GREEN-WASHED!

    Hi Everyone-
    This is a re-print of my most popular, re-printed & reviewed article on "GREEN" vocabulary so you can be more educated, informed & not be taken advantage of...

    GREEN, eco-friendly, organic and sustainability are buzzwords featured in sales pitches and ads.  It is also equally apparent that many people selling GREEN or eco-friendly products have no clue as to what constitutes GREEN, eco-friendly, organic and sustainability.  (I actually had a “discussion” with a vendor who was advertising their product as “natural fibers” yet they were selling leather.  While leather is “natural”-it’s an animal hide- not a fiber-think cotton). 

     

    So, in my effort to educate and inform, and to avoid future confrontations (!), here are definitions of some of the big “buzz” words of the GREEN movement:

     

    VEGAN: a product that is not derived from an animal and/or animal by-product.  A VEGAN person is someone who eats/wears nothing derived from animals-this includes any dairy, meat, seafood, leather, silk, honey…

     

    Examples of VEGAN product include faux leather, cotton, soy and palm wax candles.

     

    ORGANIC:  of or relating to foodstuff grown or raised without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides or hormones; "organic eggs"; "organic vegetables"; "organic chicken,” simple and healthful and close to nature; "an organic lifestyle"

     

    CRUELTY-FREE: a product that doesn’t contain any part of an animal, those which contain material obtained from an animal by means of cruelty, and/or anything made with child labor or in a sweatshop anywhere in the world.

     

    Examples include: veal or any other food obtained from animals raised/kept on “factory farms”, or any product made in a third world sweatshop.  (Remember the Kathy Lee Gifford controversy about her clothing line made in Central America?). 

     

    SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE:  products made in facilities that practice Fair Trade and are environmentally responsible.  Products can also include products made from a labor force that is “disadvantaged” (i.e. women, mentally challenged, war torn areas).

     

    SUSTAINABLE:  a product capable of being continued with minimal long-term effect on the environment.  This is key in all aspects of the life cycle of any product.

     

    Examples include anything made from bamboo, soy or organic cotton.

     

    LIFE CYCLE:  this refers to the notion that a fair, holistic assessment requires the assessment of raw material productions, manufacture, distribution, use and disposal including all intervening transportation steps necessary or caused by the product’s existence.  The sum of all those steps, or phases, is the life cycle of the product.

     

    Example of this is the planting of soy beans, the subsequent care and harvesting of the soy, the transportation to the factory for processing, and then the final processing procedure to make the soy beans into whatever the chosen product is and then, how the product is/can be disposed of (or recycled/reused).

     

    CRADLE-TO-GRAVE:  this is the FULL life cycle Assessment from manufacture (the cradle) to use phase and disposal phase (grave).  This philosophy and focus of manufacturing on the environment has been focused on by designer/author William McDonough-look for his books!

     

    Example of this is a tree helps to produce paper, which is then recycled into low-energy production cellulose (fiberised paper) insulation, then used as an energy-saving device in the ceiling of a home for 40 years, saving 2000x the fossil-fuel energy used in its production.  After the 40 years, the cellulose fibers are replaced and the old fibers are disposed of, possibly incinerated. 

     

    CRADLE-TO-GATE:  this is an assessment of a "partial” product life cycle from manufacture (cradle) to the factory gate (BEFORE it’s transported to the consumer.  The use and disposal phase of the product is omitted.  CTG assessments are usually the basis for environmental product declarations.

     

    FAIR TRADE:  certified company/product the incorporates policies and standards that include a fair, living wage for all factory employees, ample breaks, not obligated to work overtime without compensation and a safe work environment with emergency protocols in place.

     

    Examples of this include factories in many Third World countries.

     

    CRADLE-TO-CRADLE:  this is a specific assessment where the end-of-life disposal step for the product is a recycling process.  From the recycling process originates a new, identical product or different product.

     

    Examples include glass bottles recycled to make more glass bottles OR old blue jeans recycled into insulation OR plastic milk jugs recycled into carpeting.

     

    GREEN WASHING:  this is the dissemination of misleading information by an organization to conceal its abuse of the environment in order to present a positive public image.

     

    ***Green washing is running rampant now as everyone is trying to jump on the GREEN bandwagon.  Think of my above example of a vendor trying to pass leather off as a “natural fiber.”***
