    Hi Everyone!

I think the "audio gods" don't like me...good grief...What's up w/the audio just turning on and off and playing all on it's own?....ugh.

Tia was an incredible guest!  How cool is she?  Taking an idea and turning it into a global initiative is awesome!  Check out the website at www.ecochamber.com for more info.  The EcoChamber is a "green" chamber of commerce that can work w/your city's existing chamber or start one on your own.  Contact Tia at info@ecochamber.com or 1-877-326-3522 for more info to get started.

EcoChamber is about pulling ALL forms of eco-friendly and sustainable businesses, whether they have/make an eco-friendly product or offer a "green" service OR just employ eco-friendly principles in their business operations.  It's GREAT!

They also have started an EcoChamber Ambassador program for students.  This initiative will be available on college campuses across the country.  Again, contact Tia at the above-mentioned numbers/address for more info.

You can follow EcoChamber on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ecochamber or on Facebook!!

I don't know about you, but I'm psyched to get started!  Until next time.....

    CasaVerde w/ Randall Whitehead

OK...seriously, could there have been any MORE "issues" when the show started?  First, I had problems hearing Randall pre-show...Think of Verizon "can you hear me now" going on for about 5 minutes...and then the song that kept playing...even though STOP was pushed for the first few minutes of the show...good grief...

Well, if you heard us live or archived, you got an hour of incredible insight from Randall the lighting guru...He is an incredible resource AND one of the most talented lighting designers in the country!  Make sure you go to his website to check out his portfolio (with BEFORE and AFTERS) to see the difference a GOOD lighting plan can make in your outdoor and indoor spaces.

Here are the 4 LAYERS of lighting that EVERY room/space should have:

TASK-this is used in areas where you WORK or perform an activity.  Think a reading lamp or lighting under cabinets or above work island in kitchens.  This light should be placed between the head and work surface.  In the bathroom-this light should be placed to help you apply make-up and shave so you don't have shadows from  the overhead light.  Task lighting gives depth and adds dimension to your space. Types of "task" light include: reading lights, pendant and spots.
AMBIENT- is the light that simulates the "glow of a fire", is welcoming, indirect and helps to soften shadows.  Randall states that this is "the most important light" in the room.  Think a torchierre w/a SOLID base so there is no light escaping from the bottom.
ACCENT-is the type of lighting you use to "highlight" or "accent" a piece of art, furniture or figurine.  Think track or recessed can lighting.  A big mistake people make is to ONLY use this, however, this gives a "museum" effect in your space and the impression that your stuff is more important than the people in a space.
DECORATIVE- This is the most commonly found type of lighting in any home, any space.  Think chandeliers or the ceiling fan w/light from the bottom.  Most people ONLY use this type of light for ALL  of their lighting needs...this doesn't work, can cause glare and harsh lighting which doesn't make anyone look good!  Randall refers to this type of lighting faux paus as a "glow bomb".  Decorative lighting should be thought of as the "architectural bling" and is the lighting jewelry of the space.

    Great lighting resources:
    www.focuslight.com
www.litetronics.com and check out the MicroBright line

For energy efficient lighting options, Randall suggests that you do "get off of the incandescent bulb" as it's NOT energy efficient-80% of energy goes to HEAT and only 20% goes to actual light, and to look at fluorescent.  CFL (compact fluorescent light) has gotten a bad rap due to the  mercury content and hassle to dispose of if broken, but there is CCFL (cold catho fluorescent lamp) which is the next generation of lamp.  LED lights are now available for residential usage as well!  There are even trim kits available now that you can use to transform your recessed lights easily-no more cutting a huge hole in drywall to replace or install!

All of these tips apply to your outdoor space as well.  Employing a good lighting design to your outdoor space will help add value to your property, increase security & your safety/well-being inside, as well getting rid of the "big black hole" that exists at night from a picture window or french doors!  This will add depth and dimension to your landscape view.  Think solar lighting, uplights and spots and small LED lights on any stairs/paths to help "light the way" for yourselves and guests!

    Randall's website:
www.randallwhitehead.com for his portfolio, appearances and to contact him w/any questions or for a consultation
www.rwfoundimages.com for Randall's photography portfolio.  Here you can also find a Lost Dolls image (from his book The Lost Dolls) and write your own story about the doll.  Submit it to Randall and you may be included in the sequel to the book!

CasaVerde speaks to Jonathan Webb of KI Furniture

    Hey Everyone-

I don't know about you, but I learned a lot on today's show!  And I even spent a 1/2 hour w/Jon at NeoCon!

KI is the 6th largest case goods supplier in the country.  They are made in the US, 100% employee owned and headquartered in Green Bay WI.  KI's primary market is higher education and K-12 facilities, however, healthcare, corporate and government organizations are also represented.  Furniture CAN be used residentailly though, as you will see when you go to the website!  While KI primarily deals with larger design and architectural firms for end use, a client can call on their own, or go through their own designer to go about purchasing product for their project.  (If in doubt, contact me and I'll act as your liason).

What I LOVE about this company is that they walk their talk.  Not only do they utilize recycled materials in their product, but THEY recycle everything in the manufacturing process from the water used in the textile factory to packaging.  Volunteerism by the employees to help keep the company grounds AND the surrounding community is also a trait of KI and their environmental commitment.

Check them out...you won't be disappointed!

    Here is KI's main webpage:
    www.ki.com

Here is the main phone # as well, if you have any questions.  You get to speak to a REAL person too!
    1-800-454-9796 and press "0"

For PALLAS textiles, and to see the "GroundBreaking" line of sustainable fabrics that they've just introduced, go to the KI page, scroll down to the bottom and look for the PALLAS link.
