    Hi Everyone-
    Just a quick episode today...I just got back from the Kitchen/Bath International Show in Atlanta and came across some great info, which will be discussed further in upcoming shows.  Today, I wanted to discuss the rumors of Granite being a dangerous material to have in your home due to radon emissions...This couldn't be further from the truth.

    The rumors started in July of 2007 with a a "scare" of granite being dangerous and polluting indoor air quality through the emissions of radon into the home. 

    ***Radon is a naturally occuring gas that is found in the soil around your home.  Too much can be bad, and if it is found in your home, it will be found in the basement.***

    Due to the panic that spread among consumers, the Marble Institute took upon itself and commissioned studies, done w/the EPA, and funded by the Truth About Granite Fund.  This study, done w/scientists from MIT, found RADON emissions to be "neglible".  Geiger counters were used to test-115 specimens of granite (from different colors/different countries) were tested and results were consistent-it didn't matter the color or where the granite was found.

    ***Bananas, beets and potatoes showed more "activity" on the geiger counters than the granite being tested!  Apparently potasium can also cause "activity" on geiger counters.***

    Radon is found:
    69% from the soil around the house
    18% from well water
    9.2% from outdoor air
    1.3% from indoor air
    .5% from public water supply

    You can find the study, along with graphs, at the Marble Institute website at
    www.marble-institute.com.  With these findings, and to help assuage consumer/builder fears about the still persistent rumors of the danger of radon emissions, the Marble Institute has come up with the "Home Approved Stone" seal.  This seal is voluntary and will be available to consumers in late 2009.  Look for it when picking out your granite!
