Hi Everyone- This episode focused on flooring-hard and soft flooring options, healthy options and tips, and the pros/cons of carpeting. First off, carpeting is the #1 indoor air pollutor in your space. One due to the amount of space it takes up, and second, the materials used in the carpet, padding and installation. If you MUST have wall-to-wall carpeting, please make sure carpet is made from a natural fiber: wool (which is self-extinguishing if a fire breaks out), cotton, paper (used commercially now), recycled plastic, jute, sisal, bamboo, abaca fiber (banana family), seagrass, coir the agave plant fiber...(whew). The backing should also be made from a recycled material (reclamed carpet is being used now!) or rubber. Rubber is the BEST choice as it's a natural material, sustainable AND very dense. The high density of rubber helps prolong the life of the carpet, helps in sound "deadening" in the room AND if it gets damaged (due to pets, kids...whatever) and can't be cleaned, all you have to replace is the damaged piece! NOT the entrire room. Carpet, its backing and padding AND how it's installed all emit VOCs into the air. VOCs are "volatile organic compounds" OR the chemicals and toxins that are used in the manufacturing process of the carpet, backing and/or padding. Carpeting can off-gass up to 5 years AFTER installation! It is imperitive that when you are pulling up carpeting that you wear a respirator mask (can purchase at local hardware store) and that all windows are open for maximum ventilation. A thorough vacumning needs to be done afterward. If you are replacing with MORE carpeting, have the retailer roll out the carpet BEFORE it gets installed, at the warehouse to air out. Retailer/installer WILL do this ONLY if YOU ASK! Ask. Area where carpeting is being installed needs to be ventilated for at least 72 hours AFTER installation. A thorough vacumning needs to be done AFTER installation as well. While this will not get "rid of all VOCs", this WILL help get rid of that "new carpet" smell. (New carpet smell is VOCs!! You don't want to be breathing this in.). ***If you are pregnant, have small children, pets, elderly, have compromised immune system, upper respiratory issues or problems sleeping at night, PLEASE reconsider installing NEW carpeting in your space due to the VOCs.*** From the American Lung Association:
WHY IS CARPET AN INDOOR AIR QUALITY PROBLEM?
Like many other household products and furnishings, new carpet can be a source of chemical emissions. Carpet emits volatile organic compounds, as do products that accompany carpet installation such as adhesives and padding. Some people report symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation; headaches; skin irritations; shortness of breath or cough; and fatigue, which they may associate with new carpet installation. Carpet can also act as a "sink" for chemical and biological pollutants including pesticides, dust mites, and fungi.
Great places to buy your carpet/rugs from: www.flor.com
www.meridamerdian.com I'm a HUGE proponnent of using area rugs over a hardfloor surface. Area rugs help bring in the "warmth" to a room, are less expensive (sometimes) than wall-to-wall carpeting, they can be changed out easily with the seasons or when re-decorating, add a great "pop" of color and they help "anchor" a furniture grouping-especially in an open floor plan. Area rugs are also easy to maintain as you can usaually just pop them into your washing machine to clean. Runners can help you to direct traffic patterns in your space-and are great for all of the above mentioned items as well! Hardflooring choices include: bamboo, cork, rubber, Marmoleum, brick, tile, marble, stone, hardwood, laminate and vinyl. Bamboo, cork and rubber are sustainable and relatively inexpensive. These are GREAT ecofriendly choices for your space. Cork and rubber are also great for sound deadening in a media room, bedroom or home office. ***Be careful using cork though, as cork is not as able to handle high-traffic areas. DO NOT use cork in kitchens, hallways or any other high traffic room. Also, if you or other occupants wear high heels, do not use cork in rooms where this person will be walking as the heels can damage the cork flooring.**** We are going to start having guests in April! Guest will include those in GREEN services, vendors and contractors. (how fun will this be?). Next week's episode we'll discuss PAINT-the 2nd biggest indoor air pollutor... Until next week...
