Women (and Legends) Who Really Rock! with Carmen Milagro

Recent inductee into the International Museum of Women in San Francisco, Carmen Milagro takes you on a creative & musical journey every week, and celebrates "Women and Legends Who Really Rock! You can "rock" as an artist you can rock as a "vocalist, a writer, a lyricist, the leader of the band".…BUT you can also rock as a human being, as a "leader, caretaker or role model for children", and “rock” as a vehicle for social change or you can rock as a “parent, teacher or shaman”... that’s my personal definition of someone who REALLY rocks. I created these shows Women and Legends Who REALLY Rock! as a means to feature, nurture, encourage, support and give voice to those who are changing their world! These are people of all ages, ethnicities and lifestyles who are involved in any way shape or form in music, business, film and video, any of the arts, education & parenting, media, design and even politics. Basically, on the radio show we’ll just “talk” on the phone, something we do every day of our lives, we'll share stories and ideas, play some music, tell you about special events, answer your questions and will primarily, feature interviews with musical colleagues, friends and celebrities in the entertainment business too!

    Date / Time:

A WISE young woman and the Doobie Bros, Tom Johnston...

Yesterday, I had the distinct pleasure of hosting my radio show for the first time ever on Women and Legends Who REALLY Rock we actually have both a young Woman Who REALLY Rocks as well as a Legend Who REALLY Rocks!  Literally!

Tom Johnston, co-founder, guitarist and vocalist for the Doobie Bros and his teenage daughter, singer Lara Johnston’s joined me on the air! This interview was a rare treat as we talked not only about Tom's musical legacy and his love, support and admiration for his talented daughter but also about Lara's music and who, in my opinion, is well on her way to establishing her own legacy!

I am not sure why this interview had such a profound impact on me, perhaps because I have worked with young people all my life or simply because Lara reminds me so much of my dear friend and mentor Al Dimeola's daughter. They are beautiful absolutely but move through this world with a kind heart and level head and an innate ability to be who they TRULY are! Not what society tells them they should be!

As we all know some young ladies also raised in the entertainment business and who do not have such LEGENDS as fathers behave in selfish, entitled, self-destructive and often disturbing ways.

We as a society NEED more role models for young girls like Lara Johnston! We should bottle this formula for all the young girls out there who have been brain washed to think they have to act and dress a certain way to be accepted. I can only hope my niece will grow up as confident, articulate, grounded and as lovely as these two young ladies!!!

Lara has been taught from an early age by BOTH her parents about the realities of the music business. She has chosen to follow her father's example and decided to go to college (USC ) and she has observed and emulated her father's inherrent discipline and work ethic as she takes on the life of a musician!

I listened to our interview again this afternoon and one of the first things I noticed about the tone of the show was how gracious, polite and kind the BOTH were. Lara is such a GREAT role model! I will definitely share this inspirational interview with all the kids I love. It gives me great hope for a new generation of musical storytellers.

I just HAVE to share one of the nicest compliments I have ever received after a show...
"Carmen, you did a great today and I really appreciate the focus on Lara, she's a great young lady in a business where it's hip not to be."
    Tom Johnston
