Women (and Legends) Who Really Rock! with Carmen Milagro

Recent inductee into the International Museum of Women in San Francisco, Carmen Milagro takes you on a creative & musical journey every week, and celebrates "Women and Legends Who Really Rock! You can "rock" as an artist you can rock as a "vocalist, a writer, a lyricist, the leader of the band".…BUT you can also rock as a human being, as a "leader, caretaker or role model for children", and “rock” as a vehicle for social change or you can rock as a “parent, teacher or shaman”... that’s my personal definition of someone who REALLY rocks. I created these shows Women and Legends Who REALLY Rock! as a means to feature, nurture, encourage, support and give voice to those who are changing their world! These are people of all ages, ethnicities and lifestyles who are involved in any way shape or form in music, business, film and video, any of the arts, education & parenting, media, design and even politics. Basically, on the radio show we’ll just “talk” on the phone, something we do every day of our lives, we'll share stories and ideas, play some music, tell you about special events, answer your questions and will primarily, feature interviews with musical colleagues, friends and celebrities in the entertainment business too!

How do I REALLY feel about Living Colour?

For some reason it’s taken me a whole week to gather my thoughts and find some words to write this blog…so I decided to start with the easy part, our interview…

For those of you who missed the Women and Legends Who REALLY Rock! radio interview on Friday on 9/25/09 as well as the Living Colour show at the Grand at the Regency here in SF! For my interview & his responses you can now download iTunes podcasts or download it here on blogtalkradio.com/carmen-milagro. (Keep in mind; he was calling from the Tour Bus about 100 miles outside of San Francisco)

I started the interview by playing CULT OF PERSONALITY (of course!)

I have to say there were a number of questions I did not get to ask Will Calhoun before the end of our interview but I was on cloud nine, very pleased and excited to do it again sometime in the future. Apparently Will was happy and excited about our interview as well. What more could I ask for for a Friday morning show? Now about the band’s show.

Actually, I am finding that trying to write about the LIVE Living Colour show is not that easy for me. It’s quite possible that I do not have the words to articulate the actual experience and I won’t be able to write accurately about it in an objective way because I am not in any way even remotely objective. Or maybe I am feeling the “pressure” of my last blog about a Will Calhoun performance - see 5/15/09. I don’t want to fall short in Will’s eyes;o)

But this I know for sure! I was so excited to see the band. It was my first time!

The show was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! This band is so unbelievable! They are so tight when they play it’s as if they are all breathing in synch, moving and even smiling in synch. Not robotic mind you, not in that way at all but as an organic fireball of energy that you WANT to be consumed by because you KNOW, you simply know it will not harm you but FREE and HEAL you, mind, spirit and body! This band, this music, these men will heal you and unite us all.

Will's SOLO was for me, unimaginable to conceive that this existed, the energy, the passion, the drive and the FORCE is all right there in your face stopping just short of your nose as you sharply inhale the tangible SOUND into your body and absorb it into your bones. Your body cannot help but resonate and vibrate from within with the beat and patterns created by Will. Add to that Corey’s incredibly warm fierce voice, Vernon’s majestic soul projecting through his guitar & Doug’s earthbound spirit feeding the torrent of music through his bass between them and you…you cannot, or at least I could not, help but dance…yes dance to this band. Perhaps it was the hard-edged funk or maybe it was the soulful rock with that ribbon of metal R&B that made me gyrate like a “go-go dancer”. I don’t know but whatever it was try to imagine that type of connection with each & every single audience member that night.

At least this is what I felt, what I experienced. It was sheer emotional danceable bliss. And then listening to Behind the Sun, I wanted to weep. When Corey sang the lyrics my heart sang with him.

I have to say, there's nothing like watching a crowd's reaction watching your reaction from the stage. Yes, I do realize that my observations are clearly biased by friendship & admiration for Will Calhoun. And for that I am so grateful. And I am thankful I was invited to this show, my first and was able to share it with Lil (Starstruckpix.com).

Will's philosophy (and I quote) is that "the LIVE show should be an experience and different. It should not be exactly like the record"...believe me they weren't and it worked for me!

Before the band took off on the bus for Portland we grabbed a burger and some Portuguese chicken wings (fall-off-the-bone good they are and I think Will’s new favorite!) at Grubstake on Pine & Van Ness. They stay open til’ 4am and we were starving!

    Ciao!
