Women (and Legends) Who Really Rock! with Carmen Milagro

Recent inductee into the International Museum of Women in San Francisco, Carmen Milagro takes you on a creative & musical journey every week, and celebrates "Women and Legends Who Really Rock! You can "rock" as an artist you can rock as a "vocalist, a writer, a lyricist, the leader of the band".…BUT you can also rock as a human being, as a "leader, caretaker or role model for children", and “rock” as a vehicle for social change or you can rock as a “parent, teacher or shaman”... that’s my personal definition of someone who REALLY rocks. I created these shows Women and Legends Who REALLY Rock! as a means to feature, nurture, encourage, support and give voice to those who are changing their world! These are people of all ages, ethnicities and lifestyles who are involved in any way shape or form in music, business, film and video, any of the arts, education & parenting, media, design and even politics. Basically, on the radio show we’ll just “talk” on the phone, something we do every day of our lives, we'll share stories and ideas, play some music, tell you about special events, answer your questions and will primarily, feature interviews with musical colleagues, friends and celebrities in the entertainment business too!

    The Terry Disley "Big" Experience

As some of you may recall, last week I got a call from Terry Disley during my radio show (Women & Legends Who REALLY Rock!) right before Larry Batiste came on and he invited us all to his show on Tuesday 8/4 at Yoshi’s SF. So being that I had a night off, I went with my pal and P&JAMM colleague Lisa Baty! It was a treat, saying hello to Terry and two amazing musicians that are also on my album (Marquinho Brasil producer and percussion and Mads Tolling on violin) and it really was a wonderful experience to see the show with someone whose enthusiasm was so grand and who showed such an appreciation for the joy that is great music! And it was great music! Of course there was! This was the BIG Experience!
Terry Disley himself on - piano & keyboards
    Erik Jekabson - trumpet
Sheldon Brown - saxes & clarinet
    Dan Feiszli - bass
    Tommy Bradford - drums
    Marquinho Brasil - percussion
And special guests Mads Tolling (violin) and Lorn Leber (guitar)!

Except for the fact, that there were 2 couples at table #45 to my left that showed no respect or appreciation for Terry and his band, as they kept talking loudly throughout half the show until I finally had to tell them to be quiet (not what I REALLY wanted to say but I wanted to keep it g-rated for the sake of my guest)…it was quite a lovely way to spend the evening sipping wine and just getting lost in the melodies and notes. One moment, I couldn’t sit still in my chair as I Iistened to a favorite called “Old & Funky” the next moment the sound of the flugelhorn brought tears to my eye.

But THE best part of the evening for me was when Lisa turned and said she couldn’t get one of my PB&JAMM music appreciation lessons out of her mind. The one where I ask each of the children “how does the song make you feel?”. She said Terry’s song, The “Thrill of the Chase” made her feel as if she was running barefoot through a summer rain. Hmm, so it’s not just the children that are learning some listening skills in our Peanut Butter & JAMMusic Sessions for Kids:o)

As for Terry, I think he has a new lifelong fan in Lisa and together we plan to bring our little PBJAMMers to a Yoshi’s matinee before year’s end and if we’re lucky we’ll make it to Terry Disley’s show called the “Jazzcracker” on December 23rd!

But in order to do that we need your help & support for peanut butter & jammusic sessions for kids! “It takes a village” to support & nurture PB&JAMMusic Sessions for Kids whose mission it is to inspire children from all walks of life and flavors to explore the world of music and to open the doors to a child’s portal for imaginative and creative thinking! I can sit here all day and talk about it…but really sometimes it’s the pictures, videos and the website Our website is http://www.pbjamm.org …so please do take a look around and perhaps you’ll be inspired to donate a little bit!

Words of Wisdom from Producer Larry Batiste (NARAS)...

Women & Legends Who REALLY Rock!

    7/31/09

    Special Guest  ~ Larry Batiste

Yesterday I was very excited because our special guest, on my radio show Women & Legends Who REALLY Rock was Larry Batiste (NARAS) producer, vocalist, songwriter, publisher, instrumentalist, arranger, musical director, and educator, in fact SFSU CEL in the Music Recording Industry program …

So many people populated my chat room and emailed me afterwards asking about my interview with him it was amazing! We’re talking not only former students, or potential new students but colleagues and friends from all over the globe. It re-emphasized for me how beloved Larry is… We already schedule a Part 2 interview for September 11, 2009 but in the meantime I’ve decided to give you a taste of some of the questions I asked Larry and some of his responses…remember I’m paraphrasing here! To listen to his entire 40 minute interview from Friday 7/31 simply go to blogtalkradio.com/carmen-milagro to download it!

As a producer, what is the most common piece of advice you find yourself giving to your artists that you produce?

    Larry Batiste

Just be yourself and do what you do and record LIVE as much as possible. (I’m still an old-school analog guy because I love the warmth in that sound)

    Carmen Milagro

What words of advice do you have for young up & coming producers? In other words, from your experience, what should they do to make that hit?

    Larry Batiste

You HAVE to start with the basics! You have to have a great song, otherwise you’re building a mansion on quicksand. Then you have to have a great performance and finally a great production.

    Carmen Milagro

Larry I know you’ve worked with countless artists on so many different projects like Stevie Wonder, Ledisi, Steve Miller, Chaka Khan, Nancy Wilson, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai to name a few.   We could probably talk on that topic alone for hours on end but if you had to pick your all time 2 to 3 favorite artists to work with who would it be and why?

    Larry Batiste

Most recently I worked with Ledisi at the Grammy Pre-telecast as the producer of that show and she was the easiest sweetest person to work with! So for me, the easiest most professional artists to work with are my favorite.

    Carmen Milagro

Here at the SFSU Music Recording Industry in the College of Extended Learning…Why do you teach what you teach?

    Larry Batiste

I teach the “Art and Business of Songwriting” – The composer is NEVER wrong and there is no “wrong way to write a song”.

    Carmen Milagro

Larry, if someone were to ask you “what’s your secret for success?” What would you say?

    Larry Batiste

    One word, “preparation”.

    Carmen Milagro

What do you think keeps people from achieving their dreams and goals?

    Larry Batiste

    Procrastination.
