Both candidates remain popular and, while some other polls appear to give Warren an edge in heavily Democratic Massachusetts, it’s clearly still a tossup. We talk to Frank Phillips, State House Bureau Chief for the Boston Globe. Hurricane Sandy may have moved on, but it’s impact will likely be felt for some time to come. More than 7 million people remain without power, New York trains are flooded and businesses along the northeast are still closed. The economic impact is yet to be determined, but so is the impact on the election just days away. We talk with Michael Binder, Professor of Political Science at the University of Florida about what impact it might have. Meanwhile we take advantage of Prof. Binder’s knowledge of Florida politics to dissect where this key swing state stands in the upcoming election. Both the campaigns for president, that of the incumbent Barack Obama and his Republican Mitt Romney are likely to exceed $1 billion each, record setting spending by candidates for president. Add SuperPAC spending and other third-party money, and some estimates put the cost of this election at $6 billion, well exceeding the record set only four years ago by the 2008 election. We talk to Tim Farnam, Political Reporter for the Washington Post where he specializes in campaign finance. 01:06:00Capitol AffairsnoMIchael Binder,Tim Farnam,Frank Phillips,Campaign Finance,Elizabeth WarrenA recent poll put out by the Boston Globe and the University of New Hampshire shows the race between incumbent Senator Scott Brown and his Democratic challengeDOMA Unconstitutional, Looser Pot Laws, NC Swingshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/capitolaffairs/2012/10/18/doma-unconstitutional-looser-pot-laws-nc-swingsNewshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/capitolaffairs/2012/10/18/doma-unconstitutional-looser-pot-laws-nc-swings/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/capitolaffairs/2012/10/18/doma-unconstitutional-looser-pot-laws-nc-swingsThu, 18 Oct 2012 22:00:00 GMTDOMA Unconstitutional, Looser Pot Laws, NC Swings DOMA Unconstitutional:  The second circuit court of the united states has ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. Looser Pot Laws:  The U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit heard arguments today over whether the federal government should be required to reclassify marijuana from its current status as a dangerous drug to one that has medical uses. We talk to Joe Elford, Chief Counsel for Americans for Safe Access. Mortgage holders v. Morgan Stanley:  A group of mortgage holders in Detroit are suing Morgan Stanley alleging discriminatory lending practices when they were sold uncompetitive subprime home loans. We talk to Stuart Rossman, Director of Litigation for the National Consumer Law Center North Carolina key in 2012 election:  North Carolina has traditionally been a red state, not voting for  Democratic presidential nominee since Jimmy Carter in 1976. At least not until 2008 when the state helped elect Barack Obama to the White House. Both presidential candidates are fighting hard for the 15 electoral votes the state will provide. While a new Voice of Russia poll shows the state leaning Romney, it’s a close race and could, for once, decide who takes the White House. Obama is likely looking to recover after what was generally considered to be a poor performance in the first debate a couple weeks. The Romney campaign is undoubtedly going to be looking to keep the momentum the last debate seems to have put him on. Unlike last time, however, this debate will be town hall style, with questions from the audience. We talk to Kyle Kondik, Political Analyst of Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics. The debate over Medicare had continued between Obama and Romney in the run-up to the presidential election on November 6. The Romney campaign has accused the White House of gutting Medicare in favor the Affordable Care Act, reducing Medicare by $716 billion. The president has responded that those cuts are merely eliminating waste and are designed to preserve Medicare for future generations. The Obama campaign also have argued that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan’s plan to turn Medicare into a voucher system will ultimately hurt seniors. A recent report by Kaiser Health News suggests that services will be severely reduced under the Romney/Ryan plan. We talk to Allison Szot of theThe Medicare News Group. Early voting is up this year, with some analysts saying that more than one-third of the electorate maybe actually vote before the election day on November 6. With early voting likely to benefit the incumbent president, Republicans have even attempted to stop early voting in the key critical state of Ohio. However, the Supreme Court today rejected the challenge there. How will early voting affect this already unique election? We talk to Dr. Michael P. McDonald, Professor of Government at George Mason University and Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. 00:08:00Capitol AffairsnoKyle Kondik,Allison Szot,Michael McDonald,2012 Election,MedicareThe second presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney is tonight at Hofstra University in New York. Nevada is not only a swing state this election, it is one of very few opportunities for Democrats to pick up a U.S. Senate seat. For a look at what's going on in Nevada politics, the presidential race, we will talk to Frankie Sue Del Papa. Del Papa was the first woman elected as Secretary of State of Nevada and the first woman elected as Nevada Attorney General. She also co-chaired Hillary Clinton's presidential run in 2008. Part 2:  Julian Assange addressed the United Nations yesterday, calling on the United States to, among other things, cease its persecution of WikiLeaks. He also called the detention without trial of Bradley Manning an injustice and a violation of free speech. Bradley Manning is currently seeking refuge in the Ecuadorian mission to the UK avoiding extradition to Sweden where he faces sexual assault charges. Assange has said he would face the charges but is concerned with being extradited to the United States where he might be charged with espionage. We talk to Michael Ratner, Assange’s U.S. attorney. In Part 3, we discuss the case of Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum, a case being heard in the Supreme Court on Monday, the first day of the new term. Justices will be asked to decide whether a foreign plaintiff can sue a foreign defendant for a human rights abuse that occurred abroad. We will talk to David Sloss, a professor at Santa Clara University Law School and director of their Center for Global Law and Policy. Prof. Sloss wrote an amicus brief on behalf of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights supporting those suing Royal Dutch Petroleum for alleged complicity in the 1995 execution of Nigerian activists. 01:04:00Capitol AffairsnoNevada,Frankie Sue del Papa,Kiobel,David Sloss,Stephan Sonnenberg(Updated at 5:20 p.m. ET:  In part 2, we will be talking with Michael Ratner, Julian Assange's U.S. attorney.)
