Unwashed or poorly washed hands are a very common way of spreading many diseases. Such common diseases are colds, flu, eaafricanr infections, strep throat, intestinal problems, and other diarrheal illnesses (salmonellosis, hepatitis A, shigellosis) can be passed from person to person when someone doesn’t wash his hands after using the bathroom and then passes it along to someone else by handling food, shaking hands, or touching something. Today, hand washing is the simplest and most available "low-tech" prevention of illnesses. This noteworthy achievement is one of the most important proves that behavioral changes are the best prevention to all infections and illnesses.
In developed countries, hand washing is heavily promoted for people of all ages and walks of life, but few people know the history of its beginnings. Prior to the discovery of microbial pathogens, even in Western civilization, many people believed that diseases resulted from evil spirits. Most doctors didn't understand the need to wash their hands to prevent infections. During the American Civil War, for every man killed in battle, two died of illness or disease. Often the injured died from infections, rather than from the wound itself.
Three individuals, Ignaz Semmelweis, John Snow and Thomas Crapper, are attributed for initiating our daily lifestyle practices of hand washing, drinking clean water and toilet flushing that clearly attributed to these giant leaps in humankind, most of which we take for granted. To support a global and local culture of hand washing with soap and to raise awareness about the benefits of hand washing with soap, people around the world have been celebrating the Global hand washing Day on October 15th.

    Walking in the Blessing

    in Spirituality

Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law...
Suffering means:Dead to self and flesh, but alive to the Spirit.  It is putting your flesh under subjection to the Spirit of God.
The pain of obedience in the short term is better than the pain of sin and compromise long term.
God has a redemptive plan for us. We can walk in the divine blessings. We do not have to except defeat. The only suffering we have is to put our flesh, mind and body, under the plan and Spirit of God.
Christ has already defeated the enemy, just walk in the blessing. We do not have to except sickness, poverty, or suffering. He has taken it all on Calvery.
We will discuss the theology of walking in the blessings from Genesis to Revelations. This series will change your life!!!
Blessed is the Lord ? God of Israel for He has visited and redeemed His people.

    Diabetes with Donald Walker

    in Romance

Join us with Donald Walker member of the American Diabetes Association, a college professor and the Director of a nonprofit entity in Atlanta, Georgia named Diabetes Advocacy and Prevention (DAP). DAP was established to serve the growing demand for support for public health providers in the state of Georgia where diabetes is moving towards epidemic levels. In addition, DAP seeks to lower the increasing cost of healthcare for corporations.
As a type 2 diabetic, Mr. Walker's story is unique in that he did not fit the profile of a typical diabetic. He ran marathons and was always involved in athletics and good nutrition. However on February 12, 2008, he collapsed into a diabetic coma also known as hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome, with a glucose level of 1,060, and A1C of 12.8. My life changed drastically with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes- Insulin dependent!  Part of Mr. Walkers diabetes regiment involves an advocacy initiative focused on running a marathon on every continent. To date, he has completed the Chicago Marathon in the US; the Paris Marathon in Paris, France and my third in South America, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July, 2010 raising $52,545 for patients who lacked healthcare for diabetes.

Help for Refugees The Welcome to America Project

    in Lifestyle

A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries.
Guest Megan O'Connor is the Executive Director of The Welcome to America Project, a non-profit organization that creates community connections and builds bridges of neighborly understanding by providing furniture, basic necessities, education, and additional resources to newly arriving refugees through the help of volunteers and donations. They have helped over 1000 families since 2001, when the organization was founded in response to 9/11. In 2009 the founder was honored as a CNN Hero. Every Saturday, groups of volunteers gather for move-in day where they help a family move into their new home. Families come from places like Nepal, Sudan, Afganistan, Iran, Iraq and the Congo and many have waited years for the opportunity.
On April 21, the foundation will be holding an annual fundraiser, a prom-themed dinner, dance and silent auction. Megan will share information on what the foundation does, the stories behind the refugees and how they come to live here legally, what they must do to come to the U.S., and what happens once they are here. For more details visit www.wtap.org.
