Diana Claitor is director and co-founder of the Texas Jail Project, an organization dedicated to improving conditions for the approximately 70,000 people incarcerated in Texas jails on any given day. TJP, formed in 2006, does regular monitoring of the state Jail Commission and publicizes the widespread abuse and neglect in approximately 250 county facilities in Texas. Austin resident Claitor is also a writer and historical researcher -- working with the Dolph Briscoe for American History and for Wexler Publishing -- specializing in Texas history, especially the history of pre-Republic Texas and the Irish colonies on the Gulf Coast, near Refugio and Victoria. She has written for the Austin American-Statesman, the Austin Sun, The Austin Chronicle, The Texas Observer, and The Rag Blog.
