After a successful debut, he was offered a long-term contact, but a deal could not be worked out. His call was recorded and pressed into a 78rpm record. One of Joe's radio sponsors on the West Coast, Marshall and Clampett, gave away over 65,000 of the recordings. No other minority has ever called the Kentucky derby.
