  • Your goal is for people to think about you, to keep you in mind, to want to promote you to others. This is when job search is exactly like dating. You want people to say "He/she's a good catch. If I wasn't married..."
  • Attitude - are you positive? Being in transition is not the most fun thing in the world, being depressed and sad about it, and showing that attitude to everyone doesn't help the situation.
  • Appearance - It is very unlikely that your drinking buddies, having seen you at your worst, will want to make introductions to their bosses for you.  You have to separate your job search life with your "casual" life. Not saying you have to break all ties with your friends, but you have to make them allies. Imagine you're always auditioning.  You want these people to promote you every chance they get, not talk about how you act drunk.  Yeah, this is when being the designated driver would be a good reputation to have.
  • Resume - don't send it to anyone who isn't a hiring manager or does not have a hiring manager on their list, no one has time to look at the hundreds or thousands of openings in their company to try to make a match for you
  • Business Card - have a reason for everyone you give it to, don't play business card poker
  • Informational Interviews - keep them to the allotted time, have an agenda and an objective.
  • Networking - keep your network active, if someone makes an introduction, keep that person informed of subsequent connections resulting from that introduction.
  • Helping Others - are you giving of your time?  I say it all the time, don't worry about your job search, if you try to help as many people as you can someone will help you.
  • Do you trust God?
