Nearly 21,000 Connecticut Residents Lose Their Unemployment http://fairfieldweekly.com/news/featured-news/nearly-21-000-connecticut-residents-lose-their-unemployment Connecticut’s Department of Labor now estimates nearly 21,000 people without jobs have now run out of their 99 weeks of unemployment support. Given the patter of the recession since the autumn of 2008 and dour economic forecasts of ultra-sluggish job growth, it seems likely the number is only going to grow over the next few months. Last month, Connecticut’s unemployment rate actually climbed slightly to 8.9 percent. “I think there’s a significant risk it will become worse,” says Joachim Hero, an analyst for Connecticut Voices for Children, of the prospects for more and more people to lose unemployment benefits at a time when jobs are scarce. Hero’s organization recently released a gloomy report on long-term unemployment and wage trends in this state. We seem to be caught in a cycle of doubt and uncertainty. Experts say consumers are afraid to spend money until the job situation improves; business and industry don’t want to invest in new workers and production until consumers start spending; and no one is sure which way this election will take us. Republican control of the U.S. House or Connecticut’s governor’s office could mean one direction, Democratic control another.
