Brown Girl Collective celebrates BOLD, Brilliant and Beautiful women and girls of African descent by paying homage to our past and sharing our present, while preparing for our future.

Hosted by BGC founder Marcie L. Thomas, this show will address mental health within the African American community. We recently lost, Karyn Washington, the 22-year-old founder of For Brown Girls to suicide and rapper Andre Johnson attempted to take his own life last week. The light of the media shines on those with some level of fame but, unfortunately, these are not isolated incidents. Our community tends to shy away from issues of mental health, depression and suicide, but we can no longer afford to do so.

Show Guests Include:

  • Actress/film producer Squeaky Moore, who is in the process of completing the documentary film, "Face of Darkness," which addresses depression and suicide in the Black community. See the trailer here: http://youtu.be/6F1e2SO1TZk and follow Squeaky at http://www.squeakymoore.com/index.html.
  • Dr. Tyffani Monford Dent, a licensed psychologist who is also the author of "Girls Got Issues: A Woman's Guide to Self-Discovery and Healing." Find her at http://www.monforddentconsulting.com.
  • Author/poet Brook Blander who has overcome the challenges of her childhood and become a prolific writer who uses her voice and her heart to help others who are in desperate situations. Learn more about Brook at http://www.brookblander.com/14/.
