Our guest on November 30 will be Julie Cavanaugh from GEM, Grassroots Education Movement; http://grassrootseducationmovement.blogspot.com/ GEM focuses on stopping the drive to privatize, real reformers campaign, GEM is in the final stages of our film, "Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman. Julie is a special ed teacher in Red Hook Brooklyn. Her school faced a co-location from a charter that prompted them to form a school-community based advocacy group, CAPE(concerned advocates for public education), that is a model for parent-teacher collaboration. They work to lend our voice to education policy and assist other schools and work with other groups to educate, organzie, and mobilize around important ed issues such as charters and co-locations and navigating DOE process and policy. They will also begin to direct considerable attention to issues regarding special ed. They and Julie strongly believe in the power of parent-educator partnerships, empowerment, and leadership and believe that greater parent and educator control in our schools is the key to real education reform. Julie also blogs at the Huffington Post
