In 1 Samuel 25, Samuel has died.  David assumes his role as the leader of the Israeli army and seeks provisions for the men in the army from Nabal.  Nabal was a rich man that lived in Carmel.  Nabal rejects David.  David 's anger is kindled against Nabal and he proceeds to execute judgment upon Nabal.  David withdraws his hand of retaliation when he speaks with Abigail and decides to forego any violence against Nabal and his household.  God supernaturally judges Nabal ten days later as Nabal dies.  Abigail then becomes the wife of David.  David thought he was speaking to the proper audience when seeking provision for the men in the army.  David's true audience were the shepards that worked for Nabal and Abigail who made the decision to  provide for David and the men that were with him.
