You're an illustrator, too . . . or not. Either way, you have no idea how to submit your picture book to a publisher. Okay, you know where the post office is, - you just can't figure out in what form to send the project. There is an industry standard. It's called a dummy. Even if you aren't an illustrator and you're submitting text only, a manuscript might read better in dummy form. I’m not talking about you putting in stick figures or do any drawing. Just place the text on the pages you feel it belongs. This can help enormously during the writing process. Suddenly the whole story will flow differently. My first editor told me it sometimes helps her evaluate a picture book manuscript because it can slow her down when she's reading it – that’s a good thing! They don't necessarily expect it from a writer, but it can really help. 00:30:00BrainBurpsnoPublishing,childrens books, picture book, writing,SCBWISo, you have a story you think would make a great picture book. The American Libraries Association conference! If you have ever partied like a rock star then you probably have been to ALA and know that librarians can party. Yes, you heard me. I may be biased, as when I meet a librarian (or a teacher, for that matter) I exclaim, "My PEEPS!" like a goofball. But I digress. The ALA midsummer conference is the time when all the gigantic and prestigious awards are bestowed and the Newbery and Caldecott winners give their big speeches. It's a celebration of children's books by the people who love them the most. And then there are the parties...oops. Digressing. Anyway, on today's show, I will be interviewing New Orleans native and storyteller extraordinaire, Dianne de las Casas. She travels to Asia for month-long performance gigs, writes a newsletter that goes out to 14,000 dedicated subscribers, and knows how to work a crowd. We'll talk about how to promote oneself, how to tell a story, and maybe even do a little walk around the ALA aisles and see what we can discover. Stay tuned for an exciting show!01:00:00BrainBurpsnostorytellers,childrens books, libraries,Dianne de las Casas,ALAIf you have ever partied like a rock star then you probably have been to ALA and know that librarians can party. It was through the April Poetry month challenge she took on, writing a daily father/daughter poem on her blog that led her to meet a teacher who was interested in genealogical research. Teacher and blogger. In our second half we visit with Lee Wind, author of the blog "I’m Here, I’m Queer, What the Hell Do I Read?" to discuss books for kids who have gay fathers.
