Mars – Song of the Day From Brad Kronen’s “Welcome to the Solar System” Series Works every time.) So now that I have each of your undivided attentions…… Of all the planets in my “Welcome to the Solar System” Series, Mars is the planet who has the areas of life under his domain that are all prevalent and as current as one can get – War, Athletics (any kind of Sports fan included), Rage (any kind of Road or Roid derivative included), and of course SEX! So since I thought that “people would have had enough of silly little love songs” that I didn’t even bother to do a song write up for Venus’ and her nose rubbing crew, I thought I’d entertain myself (don’t even go there) by discussing Sex from the viewpoint of song and Brad’s nasty and perverse mind!! Sex is one of a miniscule few words in the English language that can emote every range of emotion from almost any teen or adult. Those three simple letters spell out so much more than just an instinctual drive or physical act. Any given person who approaches sex comes bringing their own individual palette of upbringing, imagination, fears, expectations, assumptions, hopes, angers, joys, energies and even mental health. Sex is often such a complicated and multi-layered force that many times how one performs in the bedroom has absolutely nothing to do with the act of sex itself! I have chosen 2 songs for Monday’s roll in the cosmic hay since sex happens with/between 2 distinct human voices - man and woman. Being the dualisitic devouring Gemini that I am, both songs reflect opposite spectrums of a person's approach or role assignment to sex - masculine/feminine, light-playful-creative-fun versus dark-forceful-rage filled. The first is from my 2nd favorite band growing up, Berlin. "Sex.....I'm A" was quite the shocker when it hit the air waves in 1982, but I consider it a very light hearted take to how people approach sex especially in the light of gender. The song is a duet between a man and a woman talking about how freaking hot it gets when they make love together. And just how do they go about creating this heat? Well the woman goes into her list of possibilities that rolls across the floor of sexual personae she likes to become ranging from goddess to virgin to hooker to your mother. Her voice changes with each sexual identity like she's vocally changing costumes. The word "geisha" is said with such playful agility one can picture her coming into the bedroom with a black wig and very very very short kimono while bowing and giggling. And the man? The man is........well, a man. And continues to be such for the entire song. Funnily enough, that setup has stayed the same to the present day for the most part. Ladies, for all the hell you go through with things like menstruation and child bearing it's nice to know that you have the freedom for limitless sexual expression - that is, provided you are in Westernized society and don't have a headache.) A decade later in 1992 Stone Temple Pilots released a song called "Sex Type Thing" - and all hell broke loose! The song was banned from many radio stations for its violent content and was deemed as an incitement for rape. I remember seeing the band confronted by throngs of journalists and the look of horror and frustration on lead singer Scott Weiland's face. He adamently denied that the song was a reflection of his sexual thoughts and said that it described the raw base expression of male sexual response and the lyrics were about pure testosterone. I think that the song is exactly that and is such an important counterpoint. It is one of my all time favorites because it has a dark, pulsing beat that is relentless through the entire song and to be honest every time I hear it scares the hell out of me.) Weiland's voice is gravel-like but in a seriously strong way. Throughout the song he repeats the words "Here I come, I come, I come." which at first are distant and foreboding and by the end of the song you realize, there's no escape! The song is definitely not for everyone and a lot people may be repulsed that I list it since it has such blatantly controversial lyrics such as "I said ya shouldn't have worn that dress". Camille Paglia, author of "Sexual Personae", was greatly criticized for her so-called anti-feminist statement about the need of women to be aware of how provocative they look and the sexual response it can garner in men. She was accused of pushing the woman's movement backwards in time and I feel she is one of the most liberal minds of our age and that the statement is justified. With everything in life, there are good and bad sides, fun and dangerous. Sex is such a huge, powerful, all encompassing entity that has been with us since time began. It is a natural and healthy thing, but it must always be respected and should be viewed in the light of as an expression of love and imagination as well as a sheer animal force which controls life and even death. "Sex.........I'm A" by Berlin Feel the fire, feel my love inside you it's so right There's the sound and the smell of love in my mind I'm a toy, come and play with me, say the word now Wrap your legs around mine and ride me tonight I'm a man - I'm a goddess I'm a man - Well I'm a virgin I'm a man - I'm a blue movie I'm a man - I'm a bitch I'm a man - I'm a geisha I'm a man - I'm a little girl And we make love together Slip and slide in your wet delight, feel the blood flow Not too fast, don't be slow, my love's in your hands I'm a man - I'm a boy I'm a man - Well I'm your mother I'm a man - I'm a one night stand I'm a man - Am I bi I'm a man - I'm a slave I'm a man - I'm a little girl And we make love together Skin to skin, tongue to oooh! Come on honey hold tight Come inside, it's a passion play just for you Let's get lost in that magic place all alone now Drink your fill from my fountain of love, wet your lips I'm a man - I'm a teaser I'm a man - Well I'm a virgin I'm a man - I'm a one night stand I'm a man - I'm a drug I'm a man - Well I'm your slave I'm a man - I'm a dream divine And we make love together I'm a man - I'm a goddess I'm a man - I'm a hooker I'm a man - I'm a blue movie I'm a man - I'm a slut I'm a man - I'm a geisha I'm a man - I'm YOUR babe I'm a man - I'm a dream divine And we make love together And we'll make love forever Sex Type Thing by Stone Temple Pilots I am, I am, I am I said I wanna get next to you I said I gonna get close to you You wouldn't want me have to hurt you too, hurt you too ? I ain't, I ain't, I ain't A buyin' into your apathy I'm gonna learn ya my philosophy You wanna know about atrocity, atrocity ? I know you want what's on my mind I know you like what's on my mind I know it eats you up inside I know, you know, you know, you know I am a man, a man I'll give ya somethin' that ya won't forget I said ya shouldn't have worn that dress I said ya shouldn't have worn that dress I know you want what's on my mind I know you like what's on my mind I know it eats you up inside I know, you know, you know, you know Here I come, I come, I come I am, I am, I am I said I wanna get next to you I said I gonna get close to you You wouldn't want me have to hurt you too, hurt you too ?
