Capricorn - The LAST of the earth signs and earth signs tend to be very LITERAL and tend to learn best through REPETITION. Now people, whenever Brad throws a question to his internet audience and gets a response of either crickets or tumbleweeds blowin' in the wind, apply this very simple rule: When in doubt say "Polar Opposite". Even if it's a Yes/No, Either/Or, or a rhetorical question, I repeat, simply say "Polar Opposite" and you might just get somewhere.)

My icon for Capricorn really brings this point home! For those of you who haven't the foggiest who the happy family on the beach is, the last name might surprise you:
Richard, Pat, Tricia and Julie NIXON!!!! Most images that come to mind when thinking about President Nixon tend to consistently show him with the following qualities: alone, in an office surrounded by heavy wooden furniture or festooned with papers, speaking on the phone in an either furtive or hurried manner, and while we're at it, always indoors! In the American Public's memory, the "impeached" President is remembered as a loner whose great ambitions soured into an immoral and obsessive paranoia that was to bring about his own downfall.
Richard Nixon, to me, represents the Capricorn in his most evolved and most unevolved state. As I stated in my Capricorn show announcement, life for the Capricorn is inversed, they pay most of their dues in the beginning half of their lives where their childhoods are non existent. The young Capricorn may be in the body of a child but inside lies a very serious adult since they either have to work appallingly early or play parent to their parent. Richard Nixon was born in January of 1913 in the dusty town of Yorba Linda which at the time barely had a population. His parents were Quakers, meaning that on the whole, happiness was not allowed at home. Things such as singing, dancing, holidays, swearing, and drinking were strictly forbidden. Richard was the 2nd of 4 sons. His little brother Arthur died at the age of 7 when Richard was 12 and his eldest brother Harold died when Richard was 20. The Nixon family ranch failed when Richard was a child forcing the family to move in with his mother's relatives where Richard's father along with Richard and his brothers worked in a grocery store.
Upon graduating high school, Nixon received scholarships from BOTH Harvard and Yale; BOTH of which he had to decline due to his family's non existent finances. While attending a small Quaker college, Nixon was a formidable debater, on the football and baseball teams but also lived at home and worked every day at the good old family grocery store.
Time is THE most important gauge for the Capricorn since they are ruled by the planet that rules time, Saturn. Keeping in mind his almost too stereotypical Capricorn early years, Nixon set his Capricorn goals in politics and slowly began his ascent up Mt. Political Ambition. Although the only President to resign from office, no AMERICAN, (I did not forget to type the word President afterwards, I repeat, AMERICAN) has served
more time in a national office than Richard Milhouse Nixon! He appeared on the Republican Party's Presidential ticket FIVE times, securing the nomination for President 3 out of those 5 times, but even more amazingly, Nixon has been elected TWICE as BOTH President and Vice President of the United States! This is a Capricorn who put in his time by getting hands-on work experience and in practical pecking order fashion with each step steadily rising up the path to political power!
Nixon was 61 when he resigned from the Presidency after the Watergate Scandal, a perfect age for the Capricorn who after working as long as he could remember should at that age feel a sense of lighthearted almost pranksterish child-like fun and who is usually allowed at that age to simply enjoy life and to actually seek the pleasures that they never were able to see or grasp in their earlier years.
The work ethic of the Capricorn is so impressive because of their ability to set a "goal". It won't matter if that goal is far off in the distant future, or as high up as Mt. Everest, they will scrimp and save and toil so that bit by bit they finally are able to look down the mountain of their life and see that indeed they have finally reached the summit of that life long goal!
Their gaze on the o so powerful goal is practically unbreakable. I say "practically" because every Capricorn knows what happens to them when all they can see is the goal and how to get to it. Life ceases to exist. They simply BECOME their work. How the Cappie breaks their gaze on the goal is by what? (answer even if you don't know....) RIGHT! THE POLAR OPPOSITE!
Cancer is the polar opposite of Capricorn. Cancer will become goal like only if 2 things are being challenged: Home or Family. The Cancerian receives emotional well being when they are in their homes and with their immediate family and will do whatever it takes to keep these 2 things in tact. We don't think of Capricorns necessarily as "home bodies" or stereotypical family men or women but it is precisely those 2 things that keep their ambitions in check so that they do not become slaves to "the goal" as President Nixon did.
Capricorn's icon is truly bittersweet because our 37th President dutifully fulfilled his Capricorn obligations thus enabling him to achieve his hard worked and well earned place in the position of highest status in this country. This icon shows that even by attaining a solid home and family life, he still perilously fell down a mountain that outgrew mortal ambition.
