1866 The first African-American legislators in New England were elected to the General Court. Laurence Banks in 1947 beat a white incumbent in Roxbury(Ward 9) to become Boston’s first black city councilor Edward Brooke, was the first African American to be elected by popular vote to the United States Senate when he was elected as a Republican from Massachusetts in 1966. Deval Patrick is elected the first African-American governor Massachusetts in 2006.
