African American studies professor Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. was party to a legally lynching on his own sidewall by the Cambridge PD. Cambridge police commissioner, Robert C. Haas, described the department as "deeply pained" by Obama's criticism and said Crowley had followed proper protocol in making the arrest. Massachusetts Gov. Deval L. Patrick called Porfessor Gates's experience as "every black man's nightmare."
