The death of Rodney King, who became an international figure overnight after his beating by police sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riots, came as the troubled man's life "seemed to be on a high note," the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Sunday.

Sharpton said in a statement that King's beating "made America focus on the presence of profiling and police misconduct."

"Rodney King was a symbol of civil rights and he represented the anti-police brutality and anti-racial profiling movement of our time," Sharpton said.
