Listen to Crystal Remley and you will get the straight story about cremation and advance planning for something we usually don't like to talk about.  But we do love talking about ways to stay healthy and that brings us to our third segment, Richard Matwyshein has spent a lifetime helping others and himself learn about different forms of holistic medicine and very generously shares his knowledge with us. This book is a testimony to the author's courageous research, the only author to conduct live interviews with many of the participants in this case, which helped bring Thurgood Marshall to national attention. The case of the Groveland Four remains controversial even six decades after three of the men were imprisoned and one was killed by a sheriff's posse. Thanks to Corsair's research and new evidence, the families of these men, now all deceased, are seeking exoneration from Florida Governor Rick Scott. Their story has become the subject of another author's Pulitzer Prize winning book, and that author repeatedly cites Corsair as an important source. Corsair's work to right these wrongs, in the face of danger and many obstacles, is awe-inspiring. Could such a legal lynching happen today? This is one interview you don't want to miss. Dalmont, age 91, the foreman's son, is one of the last survivors of that era of West Texas ranching. The "A Bars" consisted of seven farms and eight pastures - approximately 23,000 acres. Life was simple and work was hard, but most of the cowboys that passed through remained life-long friends, recalling their A Bar experiences with amusement. The author recounts stories of real cowboys and ranch life from 1922-1940. Wages on the A Bars varied from $25-$35 a month. Occasionally a hitch-hiker might be hired for fifty cents a day. The usual quote was, "A dollar a day and your beans." Daily ranch life on the A Bars seemed to be fairly unaffected by the Great Depression. She has written skits, poems and stories since her teen years that have been utilized by schools and churches. Author’s Beat presents three very special authors, the winners of the Village Neighbors Magazine/Writer’s League Short Story Competition who discuss the elements that make for winning short stories.  These stories are featured in the August issue of Village Neighbors Magazine which reaches almost 90,000 readers. So how did they win and what do their stories tell us about what magazine editors are looking for? The 1st Prize story begins with a common experience, the embarrassment we felt as children about our parents, but it takes a simple event and turns it into a snapshot that has humor and a subtle lesson about life. The 2nd Prize story is a ‘lemon’ turned into ‘lemonade’ as a family struggles with the realization that a father has Alzheimer's disease. What makes this story special is the hopeful ending where strangers show a kindness she never expected. The 3rd Prize story begins as a journey to a foreign land that evolves into a highly personal account of how the American invasion of Grenada appeared to a native. All of these stories have common elements that editors and readers look for in personal narrative.  It is their humanity and ability to take a relatively simple event and squeeze a great deal of ‘juice’ from it. It is with great pride Author’s Beat presents the winners of this year’s contest.  Congratulations to everyone who enters a writing contest. Our Billy Wells, a horror writer, is a unique entity. In fact, one reviewer noted that Edgar Allen Poe and  Stephen King  give their readers a break because some of their compiled stories are at most scary. Billy Wells does not allow you to get your breath. Each story is a "horror" story. This master of horror and mystery, is also a  prolific songwriter, having written both music and/or lyrics, and has, throughout the years, collaborated with numerous writers and musicians. Wells has also written many poems, short stories as well as one screenplay. He told Author's Beat that he loves movies and had seen over 1,500 by the age of 13. And that, we believe, led him to his love affair with the macabre.     00:30:00Boomers Plus RadionoBilly Wells, horror, murder, mystery,Stephen KingThis is Author’s Beat, sponsored by The Writers League of the Villages in central Florida. Men had to scrounge for food, and preparing it sometimes was a problem. Author Darlene Funkhouser believes we can empathize with the blue and gray with a copy of Civil War Cookin', Stories 'n Such.  This illustrated book contains 129 authentic battlefield recipes., often used during combat conditions.  Darlene Funkhouser holds degrees in Law Enforcement and Business Management, and is a former police reserve officer. In her book "Think Like a Man," she tells readers that it isn't a matter of girls learning how to think like a man because that's a better way to think. That isn't necessarily a better way to think. It's just different. Here's the kicker. If we can learn to think like a man, we'll know how to think like a man and a woman. They, however, will only know how to think like a man. His first book was a critical introduction to The Stranger by Albert Camus, as well as a book that initiates the reader with the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, author of The Canterbury Tales.   In "Investigations of The Reverend Lyle Thorne: Mysteries from the Golden Age of Detection," Moore introduces us to Detective Sergeant Lyle Thorne, who in March 1889 abruptly resigned from the Metropolitan Police and began training to become an ordained minister in the Church of England.   Thorne served as vicar of the South Coast resort of Sanditon from 1906 until his retirement in 1927. However, if Thorne had anticipated a quiet, uneventful life at Sanditon vicarage, he was to be disappointed, for his reputation as an investigator attracted a succession of 'clients' each with a remarkable tale. And these tales are investigated in both this volume and its sequel.   Five cases investigated by The Rev. Lyle Thorne during the years 1910 to 1912 include: The wedding of an American heiress and divorcée is cancelled by the inexplicable; An Oxford Antiquarian is found lying dead on a horde of medieval coins; The young bride-to-be of a rich widower receives frightening threats; A Sussex landowner walks calmly into the courtyard of his house and vanishes; Thorne must find a husband who has taken great care not to be found.     00:30:00Boomers Plus RadionoRay Moore,19th and early 20th century mysteries, detective,England,Church of EnglamdRay Moore, a native of Nottingham, England, is now a resident of Florida. But what happened after the hero disappeared in 1946? This never-before told story reveals Wallenberg's detention by the Russians and relates  legal and diplomatic efforts of author, Morris Wolff, and others to gain (or impede) his release from the Soviet Union.
